Long shot, but can anyone identify this regiment.
« on: Thursday 20 March 08 11:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi

We have a photo but are not sure who it is.  Possibly and Alfred/Frederick Stafford from Lancashire, possibly Greater Manchester area.

I am sure this is WW1 can anyone tell me which regiment? I realise it is not a clear photo and this was originally emailed to me so I cannot get it any bigger/clearer.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Joan

morning Joan,

I would suggest that this picture would date more to the second world war than to the first as the soldier is seen wearing a battle dress (BD) blouse. As there is a flap over the line of buttons running down the tunic top it would indicate that it would have been taken prior to 1942 when pleats and flaps were done away with due to economy measures. In fact you will have a short time span if this is the case as the Battle Dress was bought into the British Army from March 1939. It is a shame that you can not make it any bigger or clearer as the shoulder title would give you the regimental name.

Hi Old Rowley,

Thank you so much for that information.  Could have sworn it was WW1  ::)

Have to look closer at the "younger side" of the tree now.

Once again thanks
Joan

He's a Woodentop, and a Mick!!

Irish Guards

The slashed peak to his SD cap is always a Guards clue, and they wore the SD cap far longer than any other Regt apart from the Royal Military Police...

He is wearing a 1937ptn battledress top....So of course no earlier than that!

His top hook and eyes are done up, so pre 1944...

So a Guardsman from between 1937 and 1944...
One more charge and then be dumb,

May the victors when they come

I would beg to differ a little on that matey!

The 37ptn BD came in rather quickly, but not to all Regts...and the 1940ptn to which you refer (not 1942) are came in after that date...Both of these were worn well into the 1950s...

In fact there are about 4 or 5+ types of wartime BD, including the 1944ptn and American War Aid BDs and they are a bit of a minefield...

The main thing to look for is collar open with collar and tie...Deffo post 1944 then, and the collars were shortened in the 1949 version...

Hi Scrimnet,

Irish?  Are you sure on that  :-\

Thank you for the information.  I know Ancestry have a lot of the WW1 records, do you know of any sites that hold WW2 records or if this still classified information.

Thanks
Joan

Most definitely a Mick...

No other cap badge looks like that  esp with "Guards" on the shoulder title!!! ;D ;D

One does not have to be Irish to get into that Regt, but a connection would help  ;)
