trying to find Marriage between Martha Norman (cherry)
« on: Thursday 13 January 05 06:31 GMT (UK) »
trying to find the ref numbers for a Marriage between Martha Norman (cherry) and George Alton Cherry(American or Canadian GP this certificate should tell me for certain) it would have been around 1870-1890 certainly no later than 1893 when he died and his son who was named after him was born.
any help gratefully received

Hi Lee

This is the 1891 census records for George A Cherry and the Norman family

RG12/537
London
Woolwich
Ed: 1 Folio 15 Page: 19
Address: 120 Plumstead Road
George A Cherry S 28 Head Canada Physician Surgeon
Alexander Gillespie S 20 Boarder England Post Office Clerk
John Worman S 17 Servant England Groom (Surname transcribed as Worman but could be Norman)

RG12/266
London
Bethnal Green
Ed: 24 Folio: 201 Page: 14
Address: 19 Barnsley Street
James Norman M 53 Head Bethnal Green Sawyer or Lawyer
Martha Norman M 53 Wife Chelmsford
James Norman M 33 Son Bethnal Green Cabinet Maker
Martha Norman S 22 Daughter Bethnal Green
Harriett Norman M 33 Daughter Shoreditch
Harriett Norman  11 Granddaughter Bethnal Green
Martha Norman 9 Granddaughter Bethnal Green
James Norman 4 Grandson Bethnal Green
William Norman 3 Grandson Bethnal Green
George Norman 1 Grandson Bethnal Green

So I would say the marriage of Martha Norman and George Cherry would have taken place after the 5th April 1891.

Are you sure George died in 1893 as the 1901 census has a daughter Rose aged 2.

 :) :) :)

Lee,
Realised this can't be the one you are looking for - the couple are too young to have been married back in 1876.
However I have found your George A. Cherry on the 1891 Census, he is living at 120, Plumstead Road,Plumstead,London. Aged 28, single, occupation Physician
Surgeon originating from Canada.
So obviously they didn't marry(if indeed they did) until after that date.
I have found a George Cherry who married in Richmond Surrey looks like 2a 709(poor print so not sure about the middle 0 ) in Sept qtr 1891. I've checked the same quarter on 1837 online looking for Martha Norman but she doesn't appear.
I also noticed that on 1901 Census Martha is shown not only with George A Junior aged 8, but Ada daughter aged 6 and Rose another daughter aged 2,so was the George Alton who died in 1893 definately her husband -or like me are you finding lots of skeletons in cupboards ?

I am 97% certain that Martha was married To The Candian George Alton Cherry If only Briefly she then had a son 1894 George Alton Who was married to emily Prince . They had a daughter Iris who is still alive and has given me all this information but I will check again the fine details
Thanks for your continued help.
