"Jack" Straughan, a fresh pair of eyes needed
« on: Friday 21 March 08 01:29 GMT (UK) »
I suspect that I may not be able to see the wood for the trees but I have a quandary.

I am looking for a Jack Straughan, he was apparently called Jackie by must people including his nephews and nieces.

He is one of the sons of Mary Ann Kirtley and William Straughan who married in 1902, I have traced all the known children except him. They were born in 1905, 1907, 1912 (My FIL). 1915 and 1921.  He died in 1940.

According to information on at least one document I have he was working down the coal mines

Both he and his wife and all the children have the birthplace listed as Tynemouth, his marriage was also registered in Tynemouth.  But this Jack Straughan has almost eluded me, there is one possible candidate who I will not name as I would rather see if some one else comes up with the same conclusion as me a sort of second opinion.

So when was he born?  Jack is usually short for John, what was his age at death and what name was the death registered under?

That's my problem under the name of Jack I can't find him, I don't know when he was born and can find no marriage or death, however if you think he could also have been called John? .................Dec 1903 10b 303

But I can't see how Jack of four characters can be short for John of four characters

It is quite common for people known as Jack, to have been christened John. There are 3 in my immediate family, and I know of several more!

My husband is Jack only to his family and John to everyone else including me.  I could never figure how Polly was a nickname for Mary.  Then sometimes Edward is called Ted.

My father, born in the north-east, was baptised John.
He was invariably known as Jack within the family only. No-one outside the family was allowed to call him Jack.
He was known to his friends as John.
He was known to his army friends as Johnnie.

As his mothers maiden name was Kirtley, he has to be John Kirtley Straughan, born 4th q 1903, Tynemouth 10b 283.

That looks a very strong possibility Jennifer!

John's the name I would look under for all his bmds, lots of Johns I know are Jack.

If you contact the register office or check with the ONS before buying a certificate you can check parents' details etc before you buy it.

Do you know his wife's name, perhaps the marriage can be traced that way
Several John Straughan marriages, one in Tynemouth 1925 to Edna Brown

My father's uncle was only ever called "Jack" ....But he was registered & christened "John".  Jack is an extremely common pet-form of John.    The American President JFK, was known as "Jack" to family  & friends.......

Cheers
