Thanks for all the replies, I think you have re inforced the intial conclusions I came up with but it all seemed just to obvious and I just couldn't accept the "Jack/John" crossover.

SO.............

Jack Struaghan now becomes John Kirtley Straughan, son of:

Mary Ann Kirtley and Willaim Straughan,
Born Dec qtr 1903 Tynemouth 10b 283

I am interested in the background of your Straughans as I also have Straughans in my family.  Thomas Straughan and his wife Barbara left the Wooler area in the mid 1830s and went south, first to Newcastle, then to Felling, Heworth.  I have been trying to connect this Thomas to sibs or parents and so far, it's a brick wall.  Any chance that your Straughans may come from the same area?  I have quite a bit of info about his children.

I have very little information on "my" Straughans so far, they belong on my wifes Paternal side. Te earliest reference I have is a marriage of William Straughan to Mary Anne Kirtley in 1902

He was a coal miner and died in 1940 and is buried in Seaton Burn cemetery.

He had 6 children that I am aware of, 5 sons and a daughter......
Jack Straughan
Robert Straughan
Percy Straughan
William Straughan
Norman Straughan
and Peggy Straughan.

My FIL is William Straughan, born 20th April 1912, died Nov 1987.

My grandmother's mother was Mary Ann Straughan b. 2 July 1849 to Thomas Straughan & Barbara Wintrop from the Wooler area.  Sibs include Richard, (b Newcastle c1836), James (b c1837), William (b c 1842), Thomas (b c 1846), John George (b c1853), Barbara (b c 1855) and Elizabeth (b c 1857).  All but Richard were born in Felling, Heworth.  I know nothing of Thomas's parentage.  From census info, I estimate that he was born c1812 in Wooler area.  His wife Barbara was born 1814 in Chillingham.

Any chance that your Straughans might connect with this family?

By the way, the Straughan name continued through my grandmother's family (she was a Davidson) as a middle name for her son, as well as her brother and his son and grandson.

It is possible but I have nothing before the marriage of William Straughan to Mary Ann Kirtley in 1902 he died in 1960 and his wife was born in 1877 so I expect he could have been born around the smae time as her but I have got no eareir details at all as yet.

Percyporter, I am intrigued, I wonder if there is a link.

My grandfather was a William Straughan of Northumberland (Ponteland, if that district is recorded), Im not sure if he died in 1987 but I know it was around then, give or take a year at most, and that he was in his mid seventies. He was married to Florence (not sure on maiden surname).

Im told his father was also William, and he passed the William onto my father (Colin) as well (its a family thing, apparently).

However, Im not aware of an aunt of mine that lives in NZ!

Im new to all this and just stumbled on the forum, please excuse my barging in without any information to offer..
