Martha Pierce Stanley
« on: Friday 21 March 08 13:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Martha Came to Llandudno after her husband's death.
She had lived in Leamington, her husband John Edward Stanley was proprietor or the Crown Hotel in Leamington. (She was his third wife!)
JES died in 1894

Martha died in 1900 she was at Albany House, Llandudno which seems to be a Hotel.
Can anyone place her there maybe as the proprietor of the hotel?

This is definitely the correct person, her brother did the administration

Thanks Bob

Hi Bob

I looked for your Martha on an 1895 and 1899 Trade Directories for Llandudno.  Unfortunately Albany House was not listed under apartments or hotels.  That does not mean it idn't exist - only that the ownership opted not to pay to be included in the Directory - perhaps they were successful enough or it was a new hotel opened by 1901.  Have you thought about contacting the Llandudno Historical Society?  They might have more information about the hotel.

Hi Stonechat

I don't know anything about the Albany Hotel but picked up your posting when searching for the Stanleys of Leamington.

I am a descendent of John Edward Stanley who ran the Crown Hotel in Leamington so perhaps this means we are related?

The family did not only run the Crown but also owned a farm house near Leamington.  John and various other relatives are buried in nearby Radford Semele and I have his funeral ring.

Hello Stonechat,

I have lived in Llandudno in the past and though Albany House rings a bell, I cannot place where in the town I remember it from.

I would suggest a post on The Three Towns Forum, Llandudno being one of these towns. http://threetownsforum.co.uk/

There is a Matilda Stanley in Llandudno in the 1901 census. She is shown as born Great Bridge, Warwickshire, aged 35 and at 7 Bryn Gwynt Terrace. The household is headed by William Arch.

Jo

Hi Jacqui0704

Yes we may be related by marriage

There is a picture of Martha Pierce Stanley on my website at this address
http://www.cotswan.com/marthapiercedouglas.htm
Incidentally she  was known as Pattie

I have John Edward Stanley as apparently married three times

Jo

I found Albany House it is at
5 Craig Y Don Parade, Llandudno
You can see it on Google maps

I just wonder what Martha was doing there
As John Edward Stanley went bankrupt in 1892 and died in 1894, I doubt Martha had a lot of money.

As I said Martha died in 1900, aged only 42.
Her brother James Douglas must have gone up from Torquay to carry out the administration of her estate. He was about 63 by then.

Thanks for these two contributions

Bob

I found this thread whilst looking at an address from which my grandmother was baptised.  Albany House in Llandudno, I myself was born and bred in Llandudno but the Albany House in my records was in Lloyd Street.  There are some fairly big houses in Lloyd St and perhaps my ancestors were renting rooms as they tended to move around a lot during this time.  Hope this helps
