Hit a brick wall with Matilda Hayman
« on: Friday 21 March 08 15:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I’ve hit a brick wall with my great- great grandmother and I hope the following isn’t too confusing.

Her name was Matilda Hayman, in 1867 she married Alfred de Nicolas. After Alfred’s death she married John Hayman in Aston, Warwickshire.

I’m trying to pin point her date of birth but have conflicting evidence. Matilda Hayman is listed in 1901 as Birth about. 1846 Islington London. Matilda (transcribed Malicla) is listed in 1891 as Birth about 1846 Clerkenwell (transcribed Berkswell). In the BMD I can only find one record of a Matilda Hayman: - born 1847 Birmingham.

I’m also trying to see if there’s a family connection between Matilda and John because of the same surname. John was born in Exeter about 1844. I think his father is Samuel – born in Holne, Devon

I think Matilda’s mother is Elizabeth Wheatley (Elizabeth Hayman married Samuel Wheatley in Sept 1859 St Luke’s) and Elizabeth and Samuel are living with Matilda de Nicolas in 1881. Elizabeth was also born in Holne, Devon.

I can’t find Matilda or Elizabeth in 1851, 1861 or 1871 & I can’t track down Matilda’s father’s name.

Any suggestions of a direction to head in would be gratefully received.

Thank you,

Sharon

Hi,
Thank you so much for that. I need to be more imaginative with spelling variations!

I've sent of for Matilda's marriage certificate so hopefully it'll reveal her father's name. Matilda and her mother are still eluding me in 1851 so perhaps the fathers name will help if he was alive then?

Thanks again,

Sharon

Hi Sharon

Even with my imaginative spelling I still cannot find Matilda in 1851 and I have searched for hours  :(
I do hope that Matilda's marriage certificate holds her fathers name :) Let us know if you need another pair of eyes to search for dad

Hi,
thanks for your help.

I've got the marriage certificate:-her father is "James Hayman dd"(=deceased??)

He was a "gent's servt" So now my hunt is on for him - but I don't know age, place of birth etc. I'd hazard a guess that he might be from Devon, Holne because Matilda's mom was and Matilda's second husband's father was from Holne as well?

So now I'm going to try for Matilda's birth certificate and have GRO check for Mother & Father details on it. The only Matilda Hayman I can find for around 1847 is registered in Birmingham but all her census details say she was born in London.

Could she just have been registered in Birmingham and born elsewhere?

Thanks,

Sharon

Hi Sharon,

There is a death registered for a Matilda Hayman in the Jun qtr of 1849 in the registration district of Birmingham; quite possibly the same Matilda that you have found the birth of in 1847.

Thanks for the help!

I don't think I'll send for the Birmingham matilda's birth certificate now- it definitely looks like that Matilda died.

Oh well I'll plod on!

Thanks again,

Sharon

Maybe the Hayman/Wheatley marriage certificate would open up some more info?

The three Wheatley boys are on the IGI christened at Saint Thomas Charterhouse, Finsbury. Their mother was Amelia/Amelia Catherine (nee Archer, married 1848, died 1858). No Haymans in the same records.

Who were the witnesses on Matilda's marriage certificate, and which church did she marry at? (or registry office marriage?).
