Looking for John Somerville, b 14.6.1868 in Haddington. He appears to have left Scotland between the 1881 and 1891 censuses.

Brilliant. I am pretty sure that's him. I can now look for a marriage/death certificate. i wonder if the lady of the house he was visiting was a relative or acquaintance. Thanks again.

Hi spittalhill & gadget,

I just love the North Britain part of the address, I will have to pay attention for the N.O.W. acronym --- North Of Watford....tongue in cheek.

Spittalhill ~

Can't find an Elizabeth Somerville - and having probs locating a marriage for George Hobbs at the moment. If he was a butler, they could well have moved around  :-\

I'll have another look shortly  :)

Hi all,

John had 2 siblings but unfortunately both younger,  James born 04 May 1870 Elizabeth Burnet born 09 Feb 1872, both in Haddington, NB. The census result Gagdet found, John should have been 32 not 22, if it was a typo, this would prove it was his sister, if not, could be wrong one.

It was definitely 22, Tom . It was the 1891 census  :)

I've found the George Hobbs and Elizabeth in 1901 - Netherhall Cumberland. George is at the big house

RG13/4887 Folio 26 Page 43

and Elizabeth (now 36) seems to be taking in lodgers -

RG13/4887 Folio 110 Page 47

She might have been someone the family knew.

Hi Gadget,

On SP, I have found a marriage of a Elizabeth Burn* Somerville at Haddington in 1896. This could put the cat among the pigeons.
