Ritchie- Auldearn
« on: Tuesday 25 March 08 10:14 GMT (UK) »
I am seeking any info on my grt grandfather, James Ritchie, who, according to two Dundee census counts, was born in Auldearn c1855.  His parents were James Ritchie and Ann McIntosh, but I have also failed to find info on them, other than Ann may have been born in Invergordon.

Help!

Hi katman

Did the information on his parents names come from a marriage or death certificate?
Do you know what his father's occupation was?

Also, which 2 Census do you have him in?

Cheers  ;D

I've just cross checked James' marriage and death regos, and confirm his parents names as James Ritchie and Ann McIntosh

He married Mary Ann Craig in Dundee 8/4/1881
and died  in Dundee 23/11/1930

My wife calls this mystery, 'The case of the disappearing teuchters'   ;D

Thanks for the welcome.

Hi Katman

I wonder - is this James in the 1871:

3 Gordon Street, Lochee, Liff  Benvie & Invergowrie, Angus
Ref: 282/5 . ED 8 , pg 31
Head: Ann McINTOSH 45, Millworker, b Annus??,  Rosshire
Son: James McINTOSH 14, Millworker, b Nairn, Nairnshire

I think the birthplace  here of Ann is possibly meant to be "Alness".

Possibly would need a look at the original  1871 for the POB,  as well as to see if the pair of them are in fact enumerated as McINTOSH - it's possible just Ann is (it was relatively common for married and widowed Scottish woman to use their maiden name, particulary widows).

When James married, 5 days after the 1881 Census - what address did he give on the marriage cert?

Cheers
