LEE, Laura
« on: Wednesday 26 March 08 01:32 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace my great grandmother's family.  Her name was Alice Lee, she had a sister Laura who was born in 1875 I believe ( she died in 1975 aged 100).  Alice also had a sister Susan and brother Harold but I have no information about them.  The family were Roma (Gypsy) and I believe they were from the Reading/Shinfield area.  Can anyone help me find these people?

Hi

Sorry, just some questions first....

Do you know when Alice was born  - Did either sister ALice or Laura have a middle name?

Do you have any of them on any Census?

Did either Alice or Laura marry (looking for a father's name and occupation off a marriage cert)?

Cheers

Hi Ambluy,

I believe that Alice was born approximately 1862 in Good Easter.  This info came from the 1871 census.  I did find some other census info regarding a Lee family in 1871 census of a Gypsy family in the Shinfield area but not sure if these are related families.  It's so confusing!

Hi Adele

Good Easter is in Essex,  I am not sure why you are looking for information in Berkshire.  According to this thread it looks as though most of your family were from Essex

My Mum tells me that there is a strong Roma link in our family.  There was a Roma family with an Alice Lee born about the same time and I was trying to rule out a link.  The information I get is spasmodic and sometimes nothing more than a nickname so am following any leads no matter how strange.

Thanks so much for looking,
Regards,
Adele :D

Hi Adele

The other topic, basically was what I was asking about  ;D
Do you do have your Alice's marriage which names her father as William LEE the Engine Driver.....?

William Lee's daughter Alice  and her siblings all born Good Easter, Chelmsford, Essex to a father b, London abt 1841(exact location unknown)
by mother Elizabeth (b Good Easter abt 1844)
Alice b abt 1862
Susan b abt 1863 [ reg Mar Qtr 1863 Chelmsford]
Charles b abt 1868
Laura b abt 1873  [ reg: Jun Qtr 1872 Chelmsford]
Ernest b abt 1877
by mother Hester (b abt 1851 High Easter) (probably Hester LODGE - married William Dec Qtr 1882, Chelmsford
Arthur b abt 1884
Fred b abt 1885
Harry b abt 1887 [reg Dec Qtr 1886 Chelmsford - as Harry]
Sarah J b abt 1897

This is the William LEE's in 1901:
Small Shoes, Good Easter, Chelmsford, Essex
Head: William LEE 60, Engine Driver, b London
Wife: Hester LEE 50, b High Easter
Son: Harry LEE 14, Labourer, b Good Easter
Dau: Sarah Jane LEE 4, b Good Easter
 RG13/ Piece: 1673/ Folio: 146/ pg 7
(What is interesting to note is above them but one, is enumerated a family
named MONK - and William was living with his MONK grandparents in 1851 - per
other topic)

They seem to be very settled in Good Easter.. But since this topic was about Laura....

She is accounted in 1881 (above).  You say she died aged 100 in 1975 ...was she married, do you know?
But, it looks like she may have married: Jun Qtr 1898 Sheffield Yorkshire - Laura LEE and
Arthur Ashley MOORE

1891: Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield (Pitsmoor), Yorkshire (West Riding)
22 Buckenham Rd
Head: Frederick PALFREYMAN 28, Railway Clerk, b Doncaster YKS
Wife: Margaret Ann PALFREYMAN 28, b Durham, DUR
Son: Arthur PALFREYMAN 1yr, 11mths, b Sheffield YKS
Visitor: Laura LEE 18, unm, General Servant, b Good Easter, Essex

1891: Heeley (Christchurch) Sheffield, Yorkshire
45 Sturge Street
Head: Arthur MOORE 31, Warehouse Spoon & Fork, b Redditch, WOR
Wife: Laura MOORE 29, b Good Easter, Essex
Dau: Mabel MOORE 2, b Sheffield YKS
RG13/ Piece: 4360/ Folio: 114/ Pg24

The Roma family with an Alice LEE born abt the same time as your Alice  - which ones are they on Census?

The other topic appeared to list William LEE (if it's the right one)  as a Grandson to MONK's in 1851.  Do you want us  to follow that angle to see where it leads?

Cheers  ;D

Hi Ambly,

Oh wow!!!!  That's fantastic information!! ;D ;D  The hardest part about tracing most of my family is that they seem to go by their middle names or Mum only knows them by a nickname.  I don't know if Laura was married.

The Roma family had father Daman and mother Misella, all living in Shinfield, Berkshire.  Their occupation shows as Gypsy but no birthplace.  Mum has a relative Harry Lee who was apparently born under a tree in Mashbury but she doesn't know his date or year of birth so haven't been able to locate his details anywhere.  I think he was my great great uncle??

Thanks for everything,
Adele ;D ;D

Hi Ambly,

Definately looks like the info you found  is the right family, the family from Shinfield don't have any names that my family recognize so that counts them.  Looking at the info above, Harry Lee must be the step Great Uncle of my Mum.  I was born in Great Baddow, Chelmsford but have lived in Australia since I was 8.  Most of my relatives are in England but getting info from them is difficult.

I really appreciate your time and effort in finding this information.  Thank you so much!!!!!

Adele
