Orchard Family
« on: Wednesday 26 March 08 08:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'm trying to find birth references for my Great Grandfather Thomas Orchard.
On the census records it says he was born at Dorchester,Oxon in 1846-1848.
His mother was Harriet Orchard, believed to have been born in Burford around 1814.
Thomas is on the 1861 census living with his mother,Gideon Davis (who later becomes his step-father), sisters Rachel and Mary, and his brothers Joseph and Jonathon, unfortunately i can't find any earlier ref on Thomas or Harriet.
I would appreciate any help.

Hello Kerilane,
welcome to rootschat. What a puzzle. At the moment, I can't find anything!
There are Orchards in Burford in 1851 and 1841 - but no trace of Harriet. I wonder whether she was married to a Mr Orchard first, then to Gideon?
This would be shown on the marriage certificate which may turn some information up.
Also looking on Free BMD for other children's birth registrations may help with her previous name (if any).
Will have another look round.
best wishes

Thomas's baptism entry in the Dorchester PRs is interesting:

Mar 29 1846 Thomas ARCHET s/o Harriet single woman, gypsy without fixed residence.

I nearly missed him because of the 'Archet', but there don't appear to be any more children baptised to Harriet in Dorchester.

If they really were travellers, that may explain why they weren't picked up on the earlier censuses?

Jill
HELP!!!

 BATHSHEBA BOOTHROYD bn c. 1802 W. Yorks.

Baptism nowhere to be found. Possibly in a nonconformist church near ALMONDBURY or HUDDERSFIELD.

that sounds good Jill. Sometimes, you sit here and wish that someone, somewhere would find what you are missing, don't you!
I have searched with all sorts of combination to no avail - including Archard.

I looked at the 1861 and 1871 where we can find Harriet,  and both times she gives her place of birth as Oxford oxfordshire,  which would mean the city of Oxford

I found this baptism from St Thomas's Oxford
1818 3rd May Harriet d/o James & Sarah Orchard basket maker of Ox Street (married St Thomas's)

they also had Caroline in 1820 and Mary Ann in 1822

marriage 1815 May 7th James Orchard OTP x to Sarah Warren OTP x
witnessed by Richard Joes, Joseph Whitleaves & George Morgan
