« on: Wednesday 26 March 08 11:37 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know how I would access/find the passenger list for the ship "Glencairn" which travelled from Ireland to Australia in 1856/57

Hello Maxene,

Have you looked for your ancestor on the Irish Emigration Database ???

Hello Christopher. Which data base are you referring to? Do you mean the official Irish records that are slowly going on line? Or something else? Maxene ( I am obviously a rank amateur at this stuff)  :-\

hi maxene, i'm sure if you put a post on the australian or new zealand board someone would be able to help you find information about the glencairn or try christophers link.

Hello Maxene,

Click on the link I posted and then on the data base in the dunbrody.com link

I entered a surname only and got several results which gave the following details ...

First name, Surname, Age, Sex, Occupation, Country, Port of Departure, Ship's name, Manifest number, Port of Arrival and Arrival date.

Those Irish records that you mentioned that are appearing on line somewhat slowly aren't Emigration Records ... they're Census Records for people living in Ireland.

Christopher

Christopher - thanks for the link! Unfortunately, it only provided info on the America routes. I need Ireland to Australia. Thanks anyway - I have learnt something by accessing the link. Maxene

Maxene the Glencairn arrived in Melbourne in April 1857 - listed on the Unassisted Immigrants to Victoria
http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=23 but when you enter the ship name it should bring up the passenger list....but only brings up the Capt and one other person.  I do remember reading that many of the ships carrying unassisted ie paying passengers, did not always have passenger lists...just x number of passengers in steerage.

Cheers
Cando

:)Thanks Cando - I had tried that one; I thought some clever person would have another suggestion. I appreciate your effort. Maxene
