Looking for a Letitia LESLIE
« on: Thursday 27 March 08 20:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi there everyone!  :)

I have been searching for a Letitia LESLIE in my family for a few months now but can't find her birth anywhere.

She married Daniel McCONAGHY/McCONAGHIE (from Ballymoney) in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1874.

We also found that she died in Ballymoney in 1901.

We are assuming that she was born in Ireland and then moved over to Scotland with her mother, as her mother Mary McMILLAN died in Scotland and her sister is on a census in Scotland, her place of birth registered as Ireland.

Any help on this would be very much apprieciated

The LDS website lists a Letitia Leslie born APPROX 1850 at Coldagh, Ballymoney, Antrim.

I searched for other Leslie family members in the Coldagh area and see Mary Jane Leslie born 21st June 1876 at Coldagh Ballymoney.  Unfortunately, there is no mention of parents for Mary.

Both LDS records are submitted not extracted and should be viewed with caution.
Civil registration of births didn't start until 1864.
Blackicerose- do you have name of Letitia's father? Civil registration of Protestant marriages began 1845 and there's a chance the parents marriage might be available. Also name and birth details of Letitia's sister might help.

Hi, thank you both for your replies.

Letitia's father is William Leslie

I have some information on 2 of letitia's sisters:

Ann married a Robert Burns in Scotland in 1883, she was 30 at the time so I'm assuming she was born around 1853. Also Mary Jane married a Samuel Connelly but we don't know any of her birth details.

One thing I did notice is that Letitia and Ann's mother's maiden name is different on each of their marriage certificates. On Letitia's it gives her mother as Mary McMILLAN and on Ann's it gives her as Mary MULLEN or McMULLEN

Thanks again for all your help :)

McConaghie (various spellings) is a common North Antrim surname. In Ulster McMillan/McMullan are interchangeable which explains the two different names for Mary.
Leslies of Leslie Hill to the west of Ballymoney (known locally as Cow Town) are an old and well-to-do family but probably not connected.

Hi blackicerose,

Twenty five to thirty years ago I used to sell Irish souvenirs to Dan McConaghy who traded for many years from a little hut at the Giant's Causeway. The Leslie family of
Leslie Hill Open Farm were also on my list of calls www.lesliehillopenfarm.co.uk

James Leslie of Leslie Hill was one of the subscribers to "A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland" by Samuel Lewis which was published in 1837.

If you need to do a large amount of North Antrim research the  Coleraine FHS now have
a new category .. Affiliate Branch Member .. for those who wish to be attached to the Coleraine Branch but live outside Northern Ireland http://tinyurl.com/22vx3p One of their members is researching McConaghie.
