silly question probably - death certs?
« on: Friday 28 March 08 11:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Forgive me if this is a very silly question, but did soldiers who died in the two world wars get death certificates?

Hi L12 and welcome to Rootschat.

I don't know if all soldiers who died in the two wars had death certificates, but my g.uncle who was killed in France in 1917 certainly did and I have bought a copy from GRO.  It wasn't particularly enlightening and didn't even give as much information as I found on CWGC.

My experience is the same as Lizzies - I don't know about all but my gt Uncle certainly had a death certificate and, like Lizzie, no more information than can be gleaned from the CWGC.

Just remembered the deaths don't show up on the normal BMD.  You have to find the reference number from another site.  Unfortunately, I can't remember which one it was but I think it is a site about deaths overseas.

Thank you for your replies, I think it's the 'overseas deaths' that I've been missing. I'm researching the history in depth of one of my ancestors and have all the papers and stuff from the National Archives including a copy of the telegram sent to his parents. But the one thing I do not have is his death cert, it's more about completing the documentation trail than info I guess.

Thanks very much for your help - much appreciated.

L12 - I was interested to see that you have a copy of a telegram sent to  your ancestors parents.  I'm hoping to get to Kew sooner or later to get my g.uncle's papers.  I don't know who a telegram would have been sent to in his case, if there was one, I guess one of his married sisters, as his parents were both dead by 1901.
