Hi to all you Rootschatters across the pond,

I am struggling a bit with some ancestors in that it seems not only did they not appear on the 1841 census, I'm not sure if they are on any of the census, in fact they don't really pop up alot anywhere.

Some background info on the family members in Australia can be found in this current post here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,295012.msg1777266.html#msg1777266

But what I am also trying to do is find more info about them in England and I'm not doing too well at all.

I'm not getting many hits on the name Orenshaw, so either they changed the name (bit odd since my 3 used that spelling when they came to Australia in the late 1840's, early 1850's) or they lived somewhere besides England perhaps?

Anyway as it stands the info I have on the family so far is:

George Orenshaw
DOB?
POB?
DOD?
POD?
Occupation: Malster & baker

& wife
Elizabeth Orenshaw (nee Ashton)
DOB?
POB?
DOD?
POD?

if the IGI is correct they married in Uttoexter STS in 1817

Children:

Edward Orenshaw - DOB 1818, POB Uttoexeter STS, DOD 1879, POD Australia

Louisa Maria Orenshaw - DOB 1820, POB Uttoexeter STS, DOD 1868, POD Aus

George Orenshaw -  DOB 1821, POB?, DOD?, POD?

Caroline Orenshaw DOB 1823, POB?, DOD?, POD?

John Orenshaw DOB 1825, POB?, DOD?, POD?

Mary Anne Orenshaw DOB 1827, POB Uttoexeter STS, DOD 1868, POD Aus

Charles Orenshaw DOB 1830, POB?, DOD?, POD?

James Orenshaw DOB 1833, POB?, DOD?, POD?

--------------------------------------------------------------

It seems they were mainly based in Staffordshire although as I said in the other post, when Edward was transported it had his NOK as George Orenshaw (father or Brother?) Malster, Curzon St Derby.

Any help, alternative names, dates, places, other suggestions will be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Belinda.

Quite possibly they were simply omitted from the census.

What Year did each of the known emigrants arrive in Aus?

Could also be badly mistranscribed

I've found one of the children indexed as George Crenshaw on Ancestry (image is definitely Orenshaw) aged 19, an apprentice joiner in Uttoxeter living with 11 year old George Sandbrook (HO107/1007/14 Folio 43 Page 9), but can't see any of the others

Edward was transported in 1846 on the Ship "Maitland" while Mary & Louisa came together as assisted immigrants, in 1853 on the ship "Bankers Daughter"

Thanks Glen,
at least that is something. Every piece of info, no matter how small, is valuable.

Just found the family on the 1851 census, again indexed as Crenshaw not Orenshaw, living at 4 Curzon Street in Derby. (HO107/2143 Folio 536 Page 2)

It shows George and Elizabeth were both 59 (George born Uttoxeter, Elizabeth in Leek, Staffs), and includes the children Louisa Maria, Caroline, Mary Ann, Charles and James, and a granddaughter named Elizabeth

George was listed as a Confectioner

And I've just found them in 1841 living in Brick Street in Derby, indexed as the Meshaw family! (HO107/199/18 Folio 40 Page 27)

George was a Baker aged 45
Elizabeth, aged 50
John, aged 15, a Clerk
Charles, aged 10
James, aged 7
Louisa, aged 20, a Dressmaker
Caroline, aged 15
Mary, aged 13

All born out of county
