John Britton PILLINGER
« on: Friday 14 January 05 04:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi there Guys and Gals,

Could someone assist me find where my great great grandfather was in 1841 he would have been 6. I have to go that far as in 1851 he was 16 and a lodger not with his parents

His details from the 1881 census are as follows

 John Britton PILLINGER Household
    Male

~~~~~~~~
  Other Information:
    Birth Year <1835>
    Birthplace Burlington, Somerset, England
    Age 46
    Occupation Trunk Maker (Onc)
    Marital Status M <Married>
    Head of Household John Britton PILLINGER
    Relation Head
    Disability
~~~~~~~~

  Source Information:
    Dwelling 6 Myatts Road
    Census Place Lambeth, Surrey, England
    Family History Library Film 1341141
    Public Records Office Reference RG11
    Piece / Folio 0612 / 114
    Page Number 1

His birth place (Burlington, Somerset, England) I cannot find a listing for, but most of the other people in his tree are in the Somerset area (Brislington)

What I am after is a direct link to his parents who are suppose to be Henry and Martha (britton)

Many thanks

Damon

Hi Damon,
I have trawled through Brislington in 1841 and this is the nearest match I could find. Be aware though that a few pages were illegible and it may help to get John's marriage certificate to check the father's name.

Hi, Damon

Have just come across this thread and as I have Pillinger interests - my wife's GGGFather is a Henry PILLINGER b. 1759 Brislington - and I have a good number of notes of Parish Records for St. Luke's Brislington, I thought I would post the Baptisms that are relevant to this thread.
   In the interest of space I have abbreviated the name

Entry 489
William   s of  Martha P.  24 May 1829
Entry 490
George   s of Martha P.  24 May  1829
Entry 489
William    s of Henry and Martha P.  24 May 1829  Milkman    Entry 639
John Britton ? s of Henry and Martha P. 4 May 1834 Labourer
Entry 704
Frederick  s of Henry and Martha P. 15 May 1836 Labourer
Entry 772
Albert   s of Henry and Martha P. 21 Oct 1838 Labourer

You will note the anomalies at the start of the list. Between the second and third entries there is the following statement (as far as my wife could understand the writing)

"I Martha Pillinger solemnly declare that my son ?? (unreadable) in the Parish Register of Brislington in the County of Somerset as having been christened 'William' on May 24th 1829 was actually christened 'George' by the Rev Charles Rankin at that time Minister of that Parish and was always unknown (definitely reads 'unknown') by the name of George Pillinger signed Martha Pillinger declared before me this fourth day of Sept. 1863 (yes 1863) signed by J.C.Ireland (?) Magistrate for Somerset"

Make of that what you will!!
My wife's notes stop in 1839 so I do not have the baptism of Fingal

I do not have a marriage for Henry and Martha at Brislington - but that is not unusual, a lot of country people travelled in to St Mary Redcliffe or other churches in Bristol to get married, taking up temporary residence for three weeks to get around the problem of Banns.

I have a baptism of a Henry on 28 th June 1807 to a Henry and ??? Pillinger. We have to re-examine the record because if the name is Eunice then he is another son to my wife's Henry b.
1759.

His marriage is part of a double marriage on 8 Apr 1782,
James Pillinger m Hannah Ellis both otp both made mark
Henry Pillinger m Eunice Parsons both otp both made mark

My baptism notes start at 1796 and give me
Joseph s of Henry and Eunice P. 25 Aug 1796
William s of Henry and Eunice P. 27 May 1798
Sarah d of Henry and Eunice P. 9 Oct 1803

My burial notes start at 1814 and give me
Henry Pillinger aged 84 buried 26 Mar 1843
Joseph Pillinger aged 69 Buried 19 Feb 1864
William Pillinger aged 56 buried 14 June 1854

I have yet to find a burial for Eunice, but it is possible that Henry remarries late in life; the 1841 has
Folio 31
Henry Pillinger   80   Farmer   Y
Sarah                 55                N
James                 14               Y

and my baptism notes have 3 other children born to Henry and Sarah before 1825, one of whom dies within a week of birth
More on this after I have revisited the Parish records to go further back in time.

Hope this is of use.

Fred
