Could anyone date this car please?
« on: Saturday 29 March 08 06:18 GMT (UK) »
Thought the photo looked postwar, but now I'm thinking earlier....maybe. Any ideas, anyone?

Cheers,

A little larger.

POSTEES: If possible, PLEASE, scan your images at 300 - 600 dpi, for both ease of restoration and best results
RESTORERS: Feel free to change/improve/colour any restorations posted by myself.  Acknowledgment would be appreciated.

Hi China,

Do you know if it is an American or British car?  Because of the amount of snow I would guess photo was taken in North America??? (I'm more familiar with American cars).

Because of the crossbar between the headlights I would estimate 1928 to 1932.

Is it possible to do a very high res scan so we could see the logo at the top middle of the radiator grill?

Hi Mudge, thanks! It looks much prettier :D

Hi Nick, yes, the pic was taken in Quebec. By the ages of the people I'd say post-war, but this is an older car I'm sure...and there's a notation on the back about the brother's "limousine" so it may have been a family joke.

There was a second photo slightly differently posed that shows more of the car, and I did a 4800 scan of both front ends, but I'm not sure you can see anything.

Cheers,

Hi,

I'll slightly revise my estimate to 1928-1931.  By 1932 the "boxiness" of earlier autos was starting to be rounded off.  Here is a site that has a lot of early car photos by decade:

http://www.hubcapcafe.com/ocs/ford-1920.htm

I think that it is probably a Ford, maybe a '30 or '31.

Definitely not a post war auto if you mean WWII.

I love these old cars.  When I was a teenager I tried to buy a 1928 Buick, and a 1934 Chevy, but was "out bid" to my dismay.

Fabulous, Nick, what an interesing site but it would take all night to go through it all, so I'll leave it for tomorrow :D

I'm thinking that the boys were home from the war, and Uncle George, who liked to work on cars, bought an older one.

The photo could have been taken during the war, but both of them would have to have been home on leave at the same time, and as they were in different services the chances are pretty slim. After the war, my dad spent a lot of time in Winnipeg until he got married in 1947. So there's a small window somewhere between 45 and 47, that I think this photo is in.

Many thanks for your help, Nick.

Cheers,
