All at Sea!
« on: Saturday 29 March 08 13:29 GMT (UK) »
Can someone answer this query please?!  I have a relative in my tree that I cannot trace on any census after 1881, he actually died in 1919.  Have tracked him down through LloydsShipping register, though.  If he was on board a ship at the time of the census, would it be that he wouldn't be included in census unless it was a British ship?  Are "at sea" records kept separately from ordinary census returns?  Any advice welcome!! :)

Generally from 1851 to 1921 the enumeration of those aboard ships was restricted to vessels in port on census night and vessels which arrived in port during a period after the census day.
However the enumeration of the crews and passengers of merchant ships who were on board on census night is complex and has to be treated on a census-by-census basis.

In 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 the shipping returns are usually at the end of the household returns for the place or port to which the ships were nearest on census night, or with those for the place or port at which they delivered their schedules.

If you post his full details perhaps someone else can have a look for him.

Do you know if he was married?

Thank you for info.   I am looking for William Henry Eidman born 1874, details on Lloyds are 027921 Cardiff 1898  Vol 62 1899-1903, vol 77 1905-1911.  He died in 1919 in Weston Super Mare, Somerset.  He was born in London, his family moved to Cardiff, and are on 1891, but this William does not appear on this census. (he would have been 17).  William's grandfather was a Master Mariner and Trinity House Pilot (his name was William Scott). :)

If you enter 'Vesssels' in the parish, it will show you the return for people on board on the night of the census. Not sure whether it only applies to those who were in port or whether it includes those at sea.

I don't know the answer to your query Eunice but I would guess that the ones that show 'Seas' means they were at sea. I'm sure someone will have a definite answer though.

For the 1891 Census Ship's schedules were to be left on board all vessels, whether British, foreign or colonial, which were in port on 30th March, or which arrived up to 5th April, census day. Schedules were also given to every British vessel and every foreign vessel 'employed in the coasting trade of the United Kingdom' arriving between 6th April and 30th June. All vessels in port on census day were fully enumerated, as were all British vessels, and foreign vessels engaged in the UK coasting trade, which arrived in port in the period up to the end of June.
