Did they have to be killed in action for their family to receive the scroll?

Any death in service, died of wounds or disease etc would qualify for them...

I've seen some really nicely mounted ones with the scroll and penny together. I saw one at an antique centre last week for over £250!! Vastly overpriced, but if it had been one of my lot I would have haggled severely for it!

Shame they don't do such a thing these days...

Was there a picture of the 'penny', and was it bronze? That's how I remember it the last time I saw it years and years ago. I will look at the site tomorrow if there was.

You can get a relica of the scroll from Soldiers Died in the Great War Version 2CD Rom,which is available to buy from the Naval and Military Press.www.naval-military-press.com might be alot of money if you only want one scroll though.

Steve
Thank you for the info, I'll pass it on, but I am luckily the proud owner of the original (carefully wrapped in archival quality tissue paper in a special box). It was with my grandma's papers in an old folder, which explains the uneven colouring of the background, which was originally cream I think, though I suppose it could have become yellowed with age. I'm very lucky anyway, and from  the info on it  and the invaluable help from several Rootschat members I am going a long way towards tracing his military life.

I don't know much about the plaques or the scrolls- were they WW1 only and were they given to every family?

Thanks,

Bev.

I worked with quite a few "death pennies" when employed at a museum and it always saddened me holding them.  An interesting fact is the military rank was never put on them and only the soldiers name because then it made all men equal....rather a lovely thing i thought.

Sandra,
I must admit I shed a few tears when I first came across the scroll, then across the photo os John Garfield in uniform with his sister (my paternal grandmother). The photol if you are interested, is posted on the restoration of photos board, under John Garfield.

And out of interest, what did you have to do with the plaques?
