Thomas Burfoot - Mysterious 2nd Wife
« on: Monday 31 March 08 13:42 BST (UK) »
This one is a bit of a puzzle  ???

From the information I had until recently, Thomas Burfoot was baptised, 13 July 1777 in Randwick, Glos. He married Ann Stevens, 2 November 1802 in Brislington, Bristol. Ann died, 6 November 1839 and Thomas married again, soon after, to Mary Richards 26 January 1841 in Clifton, Bristol. Thomas died in Bristol on 29 June 1859.

Now the mysterious part! The entry in the Bristol Mercury (newspaper), 30 January 1841, following the marriage to Mary reads: "Jan 26, at Clifton, Thomas, eldest son of the late Giles Burfoot, butcher, Stroud, aged 64, hatter, to Miss Mary Richards of Meridian Place, Clifton. This is the third wife the blooming bridegroom has lead to the hymenial altar in the course of a few years, two of whom died within the last twelve months. The happy couple immediately left for Bath, by steam, to spend the honeymoon."

This would suggest Thomas had another wife between Ann and Mary. I have checked the marriage indexes for the last quarter of 1839, the whole of 1840 and the first quarter of 1841. The only entry for Thomas Burfoot is the marriage to Mary.

Any ideas?

Regards

The marriage in April to Elizabeth Lamb is idexed as Burpot!, but IGI has Burfoot.

But an Elizabeth Burfoot subsequently died in Sep Bristol 1840

Hepburn

Funny you should mention that, as I had only just found that myself on Free BMD, however the groom is shown as Thomas BURPOT, then an Elizabeth Burfoot died the following quarter.

Could it be that the marriage was registered with an incorrect spelling?

Hi cb1964 (or can I call you cb?)

I read through the posts before seeing the most important item - the BCFC badge! I assume there aren't many of us die-hards on Rootschat - are you enjoying the season so far? I don't think I can take much more tension
