« on: Monday 31 March 08 20:01 BST (UK) »
Looking for the parents of Jane Elizabeth Blanchard b.1885,Gertrude Charlotte,b1886;Maryb.1888;Charles b.1892;Henry b.1896;Alice b.1898;Annie b.1901;Elsie b.1902

Jane Elizabeth married Fred Thornton in 1906 living in Sherburn in Elmet in 1917
Gertrude Charlotte married Charles Ward in 1910 living in Sharrow 1917

I thought that I had found their parents namely John Blanchard b.1856 and Mary ? b.1866 but am now unsure.

Please can any one help with info on any of the above in particular Charles[charley]and Henry.

Thanks, Cyndy

I have very recently made contact with the grandaughter of Fred and Jane [nee Blanchard]Thornton.Gertrude Charlotte, Jane`s sister was my grandmother. My mother was Gertrudes illegitimate daughter and was put into Barnados in 1918. Barnados records list the children named in my first post as my mothers aunts and uncles.I have 1901 census records showing a John and Mary Blanchard and the children from Mary to the youngest living at home. [I assume the older two had left, possibly to go into service]My new contact thinks that I have the wrong John Blanchard because they are `certain` that Jane had no brothers.
So I need to look again. I suppose the simplest option would be to send for Jane and Gertrudes birth certificates?
Hoping someone can help.[The surname is sometimes recorded with an S instead of a C]

More likely jane never mentioned them. Maybe there's a tragedy/ war death/family spat  in there..

Possible death for Henry?

Name: BLANCHARD, HENRY
Initials: H
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: York and Lancaster Regiment
Unit Text: 1st Bn
Date of Death: 08/05/1915
Service No: 13978
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 36 and 55.
Memorial: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL

Unfortunately no age or parents listed for him, so can't be sure.

Modified: Ignore this - the Henry Blanchard with service number 13978 was aged 33 at enlistment and came from Nottinghamshire, so is not your Henry (per WW1 Service Records 1914-1920).

Thank you very much for the info on Charley and Henry.

The John Blanchard I have been following was born 1855/56 in Eastington.

The family I am now in contact with say that `their` John Blanchard was born in Howden in 1862.

The childrens names that match are Jane, Gertrude Charlotte, Mary and Annie.
Jane Elizabeth BlanShard  reg. Howden 1884
Gertrude Charlotte BlanChard reg. Selby.   SISTERS?

You have no doubt solved the mystery of Charley not being mentioned and possible Henry.

I have a possible marriage of John BlanShard to Mary Anne Greenwood in Sept.quarter 1878 reg Leeds 9b 494

Question. Are there two families in the frame here?

Help please for a very confused Cyndy!!

Here's the family in 1891:

Village Street, South Duffield
RG12/3878 folio 43 p3

John Blanchard Head M 30 Farm labourer b Wood Hall Howden Yorks
Mary do Wife M 25 b Drax, Howden, Yorks
Jane do Daur 6 Scholar b South Duffield, Yorks
Charlott [sic] do Daur 4 b South Duffield, Yorks
Mary do Daur 3 b South Duffield, Yorks

So it does look as though they're the same family, although the information about John does not match perfectly.  Daughter Mary was still with them in 1901 and so provides a useful link.
