Hi, Norrie
I couldn't find a direct thread for Ceres gravestones so I thought I'd ask you directly if you've any photos or records for Ceres.
I've a relative who was married to John Howie of Ceres. Her name is Jean Dobie or Durie. The Dobie is not traceable so I think it may be Durie.
However, there is a MI inscription, I assume for Ceres, which reads something like Jean DOBIE Alias HOWI:(e) of Ceres. Died: Aug 1799 Aged: 82 Widow of Jean (John) Howie. Year tentative   Mitchel Monumental Inscriptions - according to the FFHS disk. On looking at it I can see that, if the stone were old and weathered, the top of the O if missing could be a U, and the B could be an R.

Hi Jim sorry nothing for John HOWIE & Jean DOBIE but there are 2 headstones
in Ceres Cemetery, could they be connected ?

45   Oliver HOWIE Builder died 11.11.1863 age 75
children Margaret & Agnes died in infancy
Jane Howie died 14.8.1844 age 17
   Oliver Howie died 7.11.1859
   William Howie died 1866
   George died 1887?
   Robert died 28.6.1887
   Elizabeth died 1861
   wife Agnes Clark died 1877

46   Erected by George HOWIE in memory of his wife
Agnes YOUNGER died 9.11.1829 age 38?
son George died 25.5.1827 age 1 month
Margaret PETRIE his mother died 9.9.1833? age 70?
his brother James HOWIE died 24.9.1845 age 38
his father John HOWIE died 4.5.1845 age 58?
above George HOWIE who departed this life 28.3.1861 age 79

Hello, Norrie
Thanks for the photos. I have the Oliver Howie / Agnes Clark family on one of my branches. Oliver was a grandson of John Howy and Jean Durie/ Dobie whom I'm trying to sort out.
Just for the record, their son George died 03 Jan 1867 at Ceres and daughter Elizabeth died 02 Dec 1868. As far as I can tell there were ten children. The dates on the stone were useful, thanks.
As for George Howie and Agnes Younger, and George's parents John H and Margaret Petrie, I've stumbled across them a few times but haven't been able to link them with my tree. There appear to be twelve children of John and Margaret.
Given the large number of Howies from Ceres, I'm surprised that there are only two Howie headstones.
I'm grateful to you
Jim

Hi Norrie
If you ever come across a gravestone in Cupar Churchyard for James Cochrane, 1805-1877, I'd love to see a photo. There's a plaque for him inside the church, and 2 windows for his sons, which I have seen and photographed. He was the minister at Cupar (1st charge) from 1842-77 and the current minister says he is buried in the churchyard somewhere. I spent a couple of hours looking at the gravestones there last year but couldn't find it, and the minister wasn't sure where it was.

best wishes
Kirsty
