Prison record look-up at Kew 1901
« on: Thursday 03 April 08 00:41 BST (UK) »
Hi

I would really appreciate it if anybody could do a look-up for me for a James Groggins, who was a "visitor" at HM Prison, All Saints, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1901.  He was born in Carlisle, Cumberland in 1879.

I've already contacted Tyneside Archives, who have the records up to ten years before, and Durham record office have from 1910 onwards.  Ive contacted the National Offender service, who recommended the Prison Museum at Nottingham.  All to no avail.  Tyneside Archives believe the missing ten years could be held at the National Archives.

The ref no is HO 140  Home Office - Calendar of prisoners 1868 - 1971.

I'm not going to give up on him just yet :)

Going by another post requesting a look-up at Kew, I tried to order the record online.  It wouldn't let me order it, does anybody know if there are certain documents like Home Office records/Prison records which you can't order online, or am I doing it wrong?

I'd still appreciate it if anybody could help if that's the case :)

Providing you've got a reference and providing the record isn't closed, I think the only restriction is on staff time to retrieve it.

You've mentioned HO 140 but there are 921 pieces in that series :o

Do you know which piece number you want or can you work out which one you want? If not, I would think it's a research job rather than a lookup.

I'm certainly not an expert on this series but aren't these after-trial calendars rather than registers of prisoners? Wouldn't you need to know when your man was tried in order to find him?

Although, if you can find him there seems to be some tasty stuff there:

"They include the following information: number; name; age; trade; previous convictions; name and address of committing magistrates; date of warrant; when received into custody; offence as charged in the commitment (includes name of victim before 1969); when tried; before whom tried; verdict of the jury; sentence or order of the court."

I would suggest reading The National Archives reseach guide

Tracing 19th and 20th Century Criminals

Thanks for you advice :)

I've given up trying to find which catalogue the records may be in.  I've sent an e-mail to the Archives themselves, and asked if they do indeed hold the records for the missing 10 years from Newcastle prison.  If they do, they I'll go further into it, but they may not know where they are either.

Oh well :-\

The only prison register for Newcastle prison that I can see TNA holds is for 1859-1860
PCOM 2 343

Prison registers often have poor survival rates, but there are many other records through which you can trace prisoners such as court records and pre and after trial calendars. The research guide details many of these.
