Military Medal
« on: Thursday 03 April 08 23:06 BST (UK) »
Hi

A relative J E Baskott, reg no. 43393 was awarded the Military Medal in 1917, he was a NCO, I have his medal card, but it only tells me he was awarded this medal - I cannot find why? Can you point me in the direction of a good source?

Local Papers or unit war diary are good sources unfortunately no citations for MM in the Gazette.
What was his Regiment??

Hi

He was in the 193rd Siege Battalion, Royal Artillery.

His home was in East Haddon, and although I've got copies of his papers from the National Archives they just have a note awarded MM?!

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=6338095&queryType=1&resultcount=17

This will be his MM MIC it may have the date and location of award and London Gazette number.(unfortunate i doubt it will have a citation) The LG entry will probably have his place of residence as well as name and rank.

I presume that is East Haddon, Northamptonshire??

If so, the archives of the Northamptonshire Independant are the place to look.

There is a chap on one of the county websites that has access to it, but he charges rather high (well I think they are).

Rootschatter "Seahall" does a lot at the county record office (and is rather top hole) so a nice PM to her might get you something!
One more charge and then be dumb,

His LG entry is in the 11th Nov 1916 (link above) easy to find with an uncommon name. There were usually(!!) around three months between been recommended and been gazetted so any search  In papers id start around July/ Aug 1916.

Hope it helps

Hi L12 !

He was in the 193rd Siege Battalion, Royal Artillery.
  I think it's actually 193 Siege Battery  ;)

There are records at the National Archives that trace their movements they can be found in W095/5494 here by way of explanation their catalogue page

http://www.rootschat.com/links/034s/

I can confirm that when the MM was awarded the citation was given with the medal, and no copies were kept  :(  I don't know if the NA have copies of the recommendations for the awards for WW1, but I have found some, online, for MM's issued in WW2.

The picture index of the Northampton Independent doesn't show him as appearing, but he may have a mention, sans picture:

Only just had a chance to get back onto Roots Chat and say thank you to you all for replying.

I can now go further in my research, although it would have been lovely to have a photo of him via the Northampton Independent - but it's fab to know that other newspapers may have some info on other relatives who departed my shared gene pool far too early.

Thank you.
