2. Confused over MICs Thomas and Robert Garfield COMPLETED
« on: Friday 04 April 08 01:49 BST (UK) »
This is the MIC for Robert L Garfield, which hopefully relates to the photo posted yesterday.I know the photo is of Robert, and Scrim identified the cap badge as being RE. He was gassed at some time, but survived the War.
I downloaded the card from Ancestry, but can't attach it as it is a PDF.

Further info on the actual card:

There are no dates on the card.
Would the above details point to the card being that of the Robert in the photo?

I'd agree, it seems very likely that it is Robert's MIC.  ;)

Thank you mmm and Atom,
I'll keep it in mind that it probably is then. I can't find any Service Record, worse luck.

Hi giraffe

It is so annoying when you can't find any Service Records on Ancestry.  Perhaps they are still to be put on though, so it is a case of checking back when they have done some more updates.

Then again, not all the records survived, so it is really a bit of good fortune if you find any of your relatives.

If you think any of them served before WW1, (up to 1913)  then a visit to the National Archives at Kew could be worthwhile.  You can view the actual documents there.

Hi Atom
Thanks for the info. I'm living in hopes that the records weren't burned.

Hi giraffe

It looks like Uncle Bob was firstly in the Royal Engineers, and for some reason went to the Durham Light Infantry; then he went back to the Royal Engineers and kept his RE regimental number.

Or, was he DLI to start with ... and we might never know, unless we can get hold of his record?

Or, as the war went on, sometimes men who were wounded, then recovered, were placed in another unit where they were needed.  If this was so for your soldier, it looks like he had the opportunity at some point to return to his original unit.

Hopefully, his records will come online at some point to clarify things.

Don't think he was wounded as there is no Silver War Badge on the MIC...

He may have been medically downgraded though...

But...Was he a signaller??
