Mary Jane Porter
« on: Friday 04 April 08 10:27 BST (UK) »
Hello all,
I'm looking to trace any information on a Mary Jane Porter, daughter of William Porter and wife of John Winton. She was married in the district of Magherafelt 1891. Her age was given as 28 at that time. Is there any way to establish the year of death, I have already searched parish records for the parish church in Maghera.
I'd be grateful for any info.

Hello Christopher,
The lookup for Mary Jane was for a work mate and unfortunately he left a few weeks ago. I've no way of contacting him but I do know he was trying to get online so he might come across this post himself at some stage.

Regards,
Brian

Hello Christopher,

Mary Jane Porter of Knocknakielt, Maghera, married John Winton of Calmore, Tobermore, on 14 Sept 1819 at St Lurachs C.O.I. Maghera. Mary Jane came from a presbyterian background and John was a Baptist. In the 1901 census they are listed living in the townland of Slatabogey, Maghera.I don't know if this was their first home after their marrage. They are buried at Knockloughrim Presbyterian church. John died on 13 Apr 1942 and I am now trying to find out when Mary Jane died,I know she died some years before him.(No luck at G.R.O.N.I and no burial records for church.) Is there any other way I could find out. ???

Olive- think you might have the year of the marriage wrong- should be 19__?
Have you contacted the church previously? If so, go back and ask if they have any record of when the plot was taken and also if there was ever any trespass (a sort of fee non-members pay for burials) paid for the plot. Presbyterian churches usually don't keep burial records but they sometimes have other details. If for some reason Mary Jane remained Presbyterian there might be a Communion Roll which would record her attendance at Communion (usually May and November) which might help to narrow down the date of her death.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Olive,
Another faint chance is the gravedigger. At my local church the gravediggers for some time past have kept a record in a notebook of who was buried. However I do not know how common this is.

Hello All,
Sorry I got two of my digits the wrong way around, the year of marrage is 1891 not 1819.Many thanks for all information received.
