Grandad's reg.
« on: Friday 04 April 08 22:28 BST (UK) »
Hi. I think I may have a photo somewhere to assist this topic tomorrow, but here goes,

Wondering which regiment or unit my Grandad would have served in during the first world war based on memories only at the moment:
He signed up aged 16/17 and said that he worked on the guns just behind the front line. He said the gun would go for a long time so he had no idea how many people he had killed or where in fact, it would have ended up. He worked as part of a small group of men, taking turns to work the gun, and every so often him and the men would move it with a horse through the mud, only a few yards, and then would start again.

His name was Maurice George Powell but he usually went by George.

Kind Regards, and sorry about the lack of information but I couldn't help myself,
Lisa.

Sounds very like Royal Horse Artillery to me...
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Hi Scrimnet, thank you for that, now to google Royal Horse Artillery.

Found one website, which has information on the guns they used  :o Sounds like what he described.

Still can't find his record under the Powells though even with this information.

Have a dig for his medal card first....

Do some searches on here for the RHA and for how to do medal cards...

Hi Scrimnet, I'm suprised you reply so fast, it's fantastic.

I've looked on the National Archives WW1 Campaign Medals list and there's 3 pages of Powell's of the Royal Horse Artillery - none of them just George, or Maurice, George M, or Maurice G.

Having just looked for Maurice Powell there is one Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery, but there's no other information on the card.

All the rest (or 370!) say stuff like "Royal Army Medic Corps" and "Service Corps" and there's a lot in the "Machine Gun Corps"  -  but nothing for Royal Horse Artillery.

There are some really nice people on here who will dig through the MICs for you!!

I mainly do the uniforms and badges....We share the workload  ;)

There is even a Scots Regt specialist on here!

I'm surprised no one else has picked up on this thread yet... :o

Does the family still hold his medals or any paperwork??

Maurice Powell the officer you can strike him off he was Killed in Action.

He may have joined up as Maurice Powell or George Powell if so it could be difficult as there are a number of options

Service records for P arent on Ancestry yet and he isnt on the pensions stuff...Maybe a little more digging you could find a service number...do you have his medals or have access to them the number will be on them?

Tomorrow I'll put up some photos and I do have a box of personal items belonging to him which could have something from his military days inside, which I've never really looked into before.  I'll go dig it out at a reasonable hour and post it on here.  ;D

Here's hoping there's something useful.
Kind Regards,

My Grandfather unfortuently didn't keep any of his recrods and I can't find any photos of him in uniform, so I guess there's not much more you can do.  :(
