Royal Engineers WW1. Mounted?
« on: Sunday 06 April 08 15:12 BST (UK) »
Fingers crossed that I have attached a photo - and would welcome comments.
This comes from my neighbour who thinks it is an uncle (Charles Hooker) who was Royal Engineers, and who was wounded by a sniper whilst rigging up telephone wires.
Charles Hooker met his end in a 1943 bombing raid whilst serving with the Gravesend Home Guard.
My question is where Royal Engineers mounted?

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/search-results.asp?searchtype=browserefine&query=first_name%3dcharles%7clast_name%3dhooker%7ccorpname%3droyal%20engineers&catid=10&pagenumber=1&querytype=1&mediaarray=*

maybe one of these??
Royal Engineers had "Drivers" who were mounted moving heavy equipment etc.It looks like a possible RE Cap badge but it could be Army Service Corps??

Having looked at the CWGC entry and found he was Charles Isaiha Hooker there is a medal card to one Pte Charles I Hooker South Wales Borderers AND ASC.

Thank you for the medals listing and spotting Charles I. Hooker.
So it is South Wales Borderers and ASC
Just the job.
The Royal Engineers steer is just family memory, and we all know how fragile that can be.
Let's not disturb Scrimnet. I fancy that he is a fellow pie and pasty enthusiast, and he might be snoozing after his Sunday lunch.
Cheers

Scrimmers has been humping and dumping furniture all day ready for re decoration...Only intermittently on here!!

Really indistinct...

I'll have a dig on Ancestry...Just in case...
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.
