John (Jack) Francis Henry Smith - Aust to NZ

searching for ancestors of John (Jack) Smith who left Australia circa 1925.  His wife was Alice May Amiet, they had one known child, John Desmond born 1920 in Victoria (Aust) and known as Jackie.  It is not known if they had any other children. Believe John Desmond married Joyce & had children Larry & Lynette, possibly in New Zealand, it is believed after his mother returned to Australia, Jackie stayed in NZ.
Alice returned to Australia (year unknown) where she died in 1973.
John (Jack) Francis Henry Smith was born 1899 in Victoria to James Smith & Mabel Steains, he is shown as deceased on his mother's death certificate in 1955.

Unknown to which part of NZ the family moved.  His occupation is shown in the 1924 Aust Electoral Rolls as boot factory manager.

There is a probate for a John Desmond Smith, filed 27 April 1970, held at the Dunedin Archives, his occupation: a sheep farmer, place: Millers Flat. Agency DAAC, series 9076, accession D293, box/item 753,
record 350/70

Yes, Desmond is his middle name.

If this were he, how do I go about obtaining these documents?
I am in Australia, so it would require applying by mail on on-line (if the facility is available).

What would probate documents show?  Is that like a Will?  I've never seen a probate document, only Wills.  It would at least show his date of death, wouldn't it and then I could apply for a copy of that certificate & go from there.

Chances of two men with the exact name - I'd not think all that great.

and sadly with a Smith maybe no. 

Look at top of page for BDM address for certs, the National archives (Archway) site should have a link for getting copies (not much cost from memory)

The probate is like a will and does have death date or approx date

You could ask for an Dunedin Archives look up for your probate, someone may be able to have a look at it for you. Just give all the details from Agency on the I gave you.
