It's worth reading the NA guide to the medal cards http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp

The Bolton newspapers from late December 1918 may well have some coverage of his MM award. Worth checking with Bolton Archive and Local Studies Unit ( or request a look-up in the cuttings index).
