Hi again Janet.

I have been away for a while and so hadn't seen your last message.

I don't know what to think !!!  I have tried searching for possible dates for his arrival on the Sardinian and can't find anything that would work.  The Norwegian Heritage site is usually very reliable (I have used it for my Norwegian ancestors) and yet there is nothing in the Canadian National Archives site.

The Toronto Emigrant site states that the date of application (in this case Feb. 2, 1881) "This date is the date that the immigrant applied at the Toronto Office for an assisted fare"

I think it would be highly unlikely for him to get to Toronto from Halifax in four days or less especially in this time frame.

Please let me know if you have made any progress....I will look at this again tomorrow.  I am afraid the six or so ships lists I have gone through just now have done my eyes in  lol

Hi dollylee,

I am thinking that the Uriah on the Sardinian is a red herring and throwing me off track! Unfortunately I don’t have any useful information for ports of departure and arrival and without a ships name I think it is going to be difficult to find them. I have looked through a few lists for Uriah in 1880, but they are so hard to read and so many of them to go through.
I would have liked to find out which ships they sailed on, but I am more than happy to have the years of arrival for them both. Please don’t go spoiling your eyes for me dollylee, I would hate to be responsible for a furrowed brow and squint (the look I seem to have gained from looking at too may census records)! I am very grateful for the information both you and Janice have provided for me, as it helps me to build a picture of the brothers and what was happening. I will keep looking through the passenger lists on the off chance I will find something, but it could take me quite a while! (What with my squint and everything) ;D

Many thanks for all your help

Janet.

Hi Lesanne

I don’t have too much on Rhoda Turner as my connection is to the Howe family and she and Uriah had no children together, does she connect with your Turner’s?

This is what I have;

Rhoda’s born 1855 Canada, parents were unknown Turner and Christine Hanna, siblings were Bob and George Turner DOB unknown. Rhoda married unknown Valentine and had the following children; Marion Valentine, George Valentine, John Bell Valentine, David Carson Valentine. She married Uriah Howe 27th Sep 1892 in Winnipeg, Canada.

Hi Carol,

Many thanks for the information, although I am getting more confused with Uriah and starting to think he had no idea when he emigrated so the chances of me finding him are getting slimmer by the minute!!  One-step forward two steps back as they say. ::)
I don’t understand when I click on the link it says 1901 census but it is obviously not the same census. Is there any chance of checking if Joseph also gives a different date of arrival in 1906?

Thank you for your help

  Janet.

I see what you mean Janet, but if you scroll to the top of the page,it definitely says taken on 31 July 1906.
The link I provided ISto the 1906 Manitoba Census.
Uriah is 49 and Rhoda 50.

Many thanks Carol,

I wasn't questioning the info just did not understand the link ::) I haven't done much research outside the UK and haven't got access to the Canadian census so this is all very new to me.

Much appreciated

Hi again Janet.

Seems the Howe boys has a bit of trouble with dates   ;D

In 1901 Joseph is 38 b. Sept. 15, 1862 and Uriah 45, born August 15, 1856
In 1906 Joseph is 35 and Uriah 49 .

In 1911 I couldn't find (just a quick look) this Joseph but did find A Joseph Howe, male, roomer, single age 25 in Brandon.  A son possibly?

In 1911 Uriah is down as Yuiah Howe living at 295 Wardlow Male, head, married but now born July, 1858.

Sorry, I have unexpected company will give you the rest later.

Do you have the obits for Uriah and Rhoda?  If not I could send them to you.
