HELP - New to IRISH Searches - GIVEN/GOVAN/GIVENS
« on: Tuesday 08 April 08 16:31 BST (UK) »
Please help!
My Scottish searches have led me to Ireland, but I am to new to Irish geneology.
I am trying to find information on my gg grandmother and ggg gparents.

Elizabeth "Eliza" Given (Govan in marriage cert., Givens on death cert.) was born in 1850-1852 in what looks like "Duncanella" Ireland (per 1891 Scottish census from Dennistoun, Glasgow, Townhead).  She was married in Scotland in 1876 to John McLean.  I am looking to find a copy of her birth record and possibly a census record for 1861 (probably Ireland) or 1871 (Ireland or Scotland).

Her parents are listed in her wedding cert. as Robert Govan (laboourer) and Jeannie Govan (m.s. Downs).
Her parents are listed on her death cert. as Robert Givens and Ann Givens (m.s. Dane).

Can someone perform these searches for me, or can you advise me where I may begin to look for the information I need.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 so there will be no birth certificate for Eliza. First complete Irish census is 1901 and only small fragments for a few earlier ones survive.

Could you given more details re 1891 census (Eliza's name, age, etc.) or post just the bit that says "Duncanella" so we could try to see what it might really be.

Can't find a townland called Duncenalla (as foud on 1891 census on your McLean post) but closest I could get was a Ducalla in Co. Kerry and a Doonvinalla in Co. Mayo.

Thank you for the information.  Its a shame those records are not available.  I have asked the woman who provided me with the 1891 census information to email me a copy/or post so I can try to decipher the name (if  don't hear, I will just order a copy).  I appreciate you checking the possibilities for me.  I will let you know what I come up with.  Thanks again.

If you are still checking this post, I have a copy of that census (still looks like Duncanalla to me), but cannot for the life of me attach it.  Is there any chance I can email it to you for review?  I would really appreciate it.  Thank you.

Sorry but not having much luck figuring out the place D____ll__ is the best I can do which isn't any help. Don't suppose there's any more details on other census - even a county would help.
Any chance of the details of the person 2 up from this mystery entry? Looks like it's 'Achad_y, Derry' which could be Aghadowey?

Thanks for looking.
Don't know.  The place name looks like one of the following: Achoday/Achodry/Achodey, Derry.  Her name seems to be Mary Ann Gillen (G could be a C, but fairly certain its a G), head, married, age 40(something?), ocupation: Shirt Finisher, also at 93 Middleton Place, Parish of Townhead, Dennistoun.
Let me know if that helps.
