Robertson-Mitchel families
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 05:17 BST (UK) »
Have just found the birth of my g/g/grandfather John Robertson in Dollar Clackmannanshire
quote-
Dollar 04 Aug 1829
Natural son of Donald Robertson and Christian Mitchell born 30 Jan last, baptized this day at the Manse, the mother being a spinster.
unquote.
on the IGI his date of birth is listed as 30th Jan 1829 and baptism is as above.
On his death cert 30Jul 1877, his mother is listed as Christian Mitchell now Wright...a fathers name is not mentioned.
Found a marriage for a Robert Wright and Christian Mitchel and the 1851 census states she was born in Dollar but cannot find a birth for her ...can anyone help please..there is a member submitted record on IGI for a marriage but that would make her 14 years old when she had John Robertson..have tried every which way for a birth and nothing on his natural father either...all info greatly accepted.patvp

Hi

Re: the submitted marriage entry for Robert Wright/Christian Mitchell on 13.4.1832.  Submitted entries are always suspect as they are the product of somebody else's research which may not always be accurate

It shows that Robert was 18 at the time of marriage so allegedly born 1814 - incorrect

The 1841 shows his birthyear as 1805 and Christian's as 1807
The 1851 shows his birthyear as 1805 and Christian's as 1806
The 1861 shows Christian widowed and birthyear 1804

Those birthyears would make her mid 20's when she had John

What info do you have on Christians death?  Does it tie in with the birth of abt 1815 as per the IGI.  Regards,  Steve :O)

Thank you both for that info.  Yes I had noted John was living with Christian Fulton but have no idea who she is..may have been close as he named one of his son's Fulton Robertson and his second daughter was Christina Mitchell Robertson..so we do have the "naming"thingy.  Did a search on SP last night for Christian the only two remotely close are both born in Alloa 1801 and 1803..nothing in Dollar  ??? And so far have been unable to find a death for her..very elusive lady this one..worked my way thru'IGI for both Christian and Donald Robertson ..no luck... could she have told "fibs"about the fathers name or was this taken seriously.. This is driving me nuts..patvp

Not all children were baptised and even if they were - the LDS have not  transcribed every baptism on the IGI

Christian is not on the 1871 census so presumably died between 1861-1871

I doubt the 1832 marriage entry will tell you anything more unless either of the witnesses was a Mitchell,  so,  even though it's frustrating - sometimes you have to accept that you've gone as far as you can on a person

I have had to give up on my paternal great grandparents because of the lack of Irish records
