See http://www.thecore.com/seanruad for details of parish, etc.
Also put 'alderford roscommon' into search engine like Google and lots of entries come up.

Hi sancti,

That's a surname that's common in Ulster.

Griffiths Valuation extracts - Roscommon 1857-58 don't list any families named McFarlane.

There's no listing in the Spinning Wheel Census (1796 Flax Growers List) either.

An e-mail to the Editor of the Roscommon Herald might produce a result www.roscommonherald.ie/general/contact.asp If you do that mention RootsChat.

@ Sancti

My name is McFarlane and my Ancestors came from Roscommon - Alderford to be exact!

They settled in Coatdyke, down in the area where the old B&Q store used to be boardering the old Monkland Canal, then moved up into Airdrie, finally settling in Bell St after having lived for a short period of time in Aitchison St and High St.

I'm not 100% certain but it would appear that a few McFarlane brothers came over at the same time, some with families some without. They appear to have came over from Ireland due to the Potato Famine.

The earliest ancestor I have found is a Francis McFarlane (born circa 1786 ) and his wife Catherine Gilmartin, both from Alderford, they are my great great great great grandparents. :)
His son Owen McFarlane and his wife Elizabeth Kelly came over to Scotland and settled in Coatdyke.

Alderford is quite easy to find, if you Google Ballyfarnon or Ballyfarnan then Alderford is on the road which leaves this area to the south east.

Alderford House is still standing.

witchy2k1, I think we might be related.  My great, great, great grandfather is Owen McFarlane who married Elizabeth Kellly.  Do you have any more information on Francis McFarlane?

All I know about Francis is that he was the father of Owen, I've got nothing on Francis himself nor his wife Catherine Gilmartin.  Sorry.

I've been searching for years but I'm starting to think that all the Irish records regarding Francis have been destroyed.

My link to these people is...

Francis - Father of Owen
Owen - Father of John
John - Father of James
James - Father of David
David - Father of Peter
Peter - Father of Me!

Would be great to see where you come into the fold :)

Send me a Private Message and I'll give you access to my Genes Reunited tree.

Regards,

Stu (McFarlane)
