Help,Can anyone read this please!
« on: Saturday 12 April 08 09:51 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I can make out the words "Son In Law" and "Daughter" but it's the words between them i am not sure about.
The more i look at them the more i think it may look a bit like "visitor",just wondered what anyone else thought...(providing i manage to put it on here correctly of course!!!)
Thanks,Flo'

Which leads you to wonder WHY daughter and hubby were staying there...
Little bit of family history behind that.

I lost a great grandmother that way... she was off with  one of her daughters, the girl was about to deliver...

Hello,
I wondered that...they had only just got married too.
The families were sheep farmers so maybe just helping out at lambing season..i doubt i shall ever find out though  ::)

Lambing season may well have been a time for the family to rally round.
Then again, they might have started off with Mum and Dad, while they were getting their own place....

Agree the word is "visitor" but why put it under the designation "son in law"?

Implication is at least that they were only staying temporarily .

Um, yes, forgot about that....
Seems pretty certain that they were there for the lambing then...
How interesting. It lets you into their lives for just a moment.

Maybe son-in-law wasn't too popular or there was some undercurrent about him that the parents wanted made plain to the local enumerator.

Agree that little asides let us into the lives of our ancestors and we need to be sensitive to the language used.
