4 medals any idea which war ??
« on: Saturday 12 April 08 12:44 BST (UK) »
I have 4 medals belonging to a James Slater my husbands Uncles father.
We cannot find out where Reginald his son came from ,and was hoping to find out more about his father to see if I can narrow down the area where he was born ?? as according to Reginalds marriage cert in 1933 his father was dead.
The medals are
Star shaped Egypt 1882
Relief of Peking China 1900 says J Slater A.B  H.M Endymion
Witu 1890 J Slater A.B  H.M.S Brisk
Egypt 1882 James Slater ORD Seaman H.M.S Inconstant
Any help much appreciated

A very nice group of medals.

You have:
Queens Egypt Medal for 1882 (Alexandria 11th July clasp or no?)
East and West Africa Medal (Witu 1890 clasp)
China 1900 Medal (according to my roll he should have 2 clasps; Taku Forts and Relief of Pekin)
Khedive's Star 1882

That's the correct order. So they're awarded for the Egypt Invervention 1882; a small scale punitive expedition in East Africa; and the 3rd China War (or boxer rebellion)

And you can download James Slater's Naval record here:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=6852964&queryType=1&resultcount=1

His number tallies with the China 1900 roll for HMS Endymion, so we can be sure he's the right man.

Anything particular on the record you're unsure of, do come back to us.
There could be a fair bit of jargon

Thank you so much have downloaded it and now I know he was a glass cutter and when and where he was born. I wish I had known about this site some years ago .
You see his son went out one day not long after he married and never returned, we did hear he had gone to Canada to open a clinic there, but as he had lied about his age did not have much hope of tracing him further.
Now I have his fathers details should be easier to find his birth, as least I hope so.
There are  few things I dont understand on the records ,but cant quite read it, but my printer is outside so will have to go and scan the form first
Thanks so much

I have been reading his naval record and am fascinated to see how many ships he was on is that normal??
Also is there any way I can find out which countries he was in at any one time as it does not say on his naval sheet.
I am trying to work out when he was in England so I can tie his marriage and childrens dates down
Thanks

Yep, it's normal that they had a fair number of postings.
Note though the list is ships or shore stations he served in. All shore stations, naval bases, barracks (or "stone frigates") were named in the same way as ships.

For example:
If you see HMS Victory on his record, that's Portsmouth
HMS Vivid - Devonport
HMS Pembroke - Chatham

Hope that helps  :)
