William Franklin George Joseph - Royal Berkshires died 1918
« on: Saturday 12 April 08 15:56 BST (UK) »
I am new to this board and I only joined yesterday but I am
getting a bit stuck as I am looking for the World War 1 details
of my disant relative and I am mainly using a Family Tree book
to guide me through each individual so far.

It is "The Samuel Family of London and Liverpool from 1755 onwards,

A Biographical and Genealogical Dictionary of the Descendants of
Emanuel Samuel."

I have found that Lieut., William Franklin George Joseph, who
fought in the WW1 and was killed in action in Berry-au-Bac,
France, with the Royal Berkshire Regiment.
Although I used Google for that. I think I've clicked on the wrong
Battalion's site.

I have used these sites but I do the right thing.

Can anyone please advise or help me out?

Hello Rosalind,

Welcome to Rootschat and the Armed Forces Board.

I don't know the intricacies of the Royal Berks. Regt. but looking at his entry on the CWGC it appears that 2nd Lieut. Joseph was in the 6th Battalion, but attached to the 2nd at the time he was killed.

It also appears that his service record is held at the National Archives.

This is also a very good site for general background and organisation of the army in WW1

I'm sure some of the others will pop up and add some more.

I am not sure exactly what details you want but here is his birth

JOSEPH William Franklin G q 1883  Kensington   1a 202

You could trace the family on 1891 and 1901 Census if you want

I can see the family on 1891 Census where father George S Joseph's occupation was solicitor. Do you have details or would you like details.

Phil thank you for your help and it's invaluable to my searches.
Also I didn't realise that different Regiments could be broken up into so many battalions and then split their duties between each other.
I am researching the Franklin, Samuel's, Jessel's. Waleys and Sassoon's among other many branches of my family.

Geoff thanks for your help and yes both of the Census' would be very helpful or where can I find them for myself.

He was born in 23 Clancricarde Gardens, born 30 December 1882.
Educated at Oxford University (BA), yes I do have some of his parents details but not much yet. His parents were George Solomon Joseph and Henrietta Marian Franklin, daughter of my Great, Great Grandfather Ellis Abraham Franklin and Adelaide, daughter of Louis Samuel.

I am using this site for basic background as it's taken and updated from the book that I mentioned in my initial post.

Have you downloaded his Medal Index Card yet?

He seems to have been in the army prior to the Royal Berks.

Thanks and another thing that I didn't know was that I could downloaded Medal Index Card details. I have now and saved it too.

Also I thought/assumed that the Royal Berks. is or was an Army Regiment then I might be wrong.
