Hi Dragonfly,
The cap badges looks like it could be The Westminster (Yeomanry) Dragoons.  However if you can do a high res' posting of just the cap badge it may help to decide one way or the other.

old rowley

I would confirm OR (yet again he beat me to the thread! :P) on that one...

BTW he doesnt have to have been on the Somme to have been gassed...It was used all along the front.

As you can see he was moved to the MGC This was because all Regt Machine Gunners were formed into this new Regt, and became a divisional asset rather than a Regt one.

Hi Scrimmet
It's good to have a second confirmation about the cap badge, at least now I have a basis to start research on my grandfather.

Do you think you could expand on your sentence about moving to the MGC? Would you have an approx. date that this might have happened and by changing to the MGC would he have changed his capbadge or kept the same one?

One last question, when he changed to the MGC he has a different regt no.   Being ex RAF well (WRAF to be exact), I kept my service number throughout my service.  Don't (did'nt) the army do the same, or am I getting confused?

Hope you can help.

This should explain things for you...(saves me and my x2 finger typing!  :P)

http://www.1914-1918.net/mgc.htm

The reason why his number changed is that it was a Regimental number, and not a Service number...Ergo he changed Regiments, he changed numbers!

BTW I couldn't find him on Ancestry...

BTW x2

I was never confused! Then again I've only worked with Crab Air... (Well PMRAFNS anyway)

Yes i'ts becoming clearer now and thanks for looking on Ancestry also.

Its unfortunate I know but as Williams is such  a 'popular' name it does make things extra difficult. My grandad survived the war so I was hoping that I would find him amongst the pensions records but alas no.  You are obviously very knowledgeable about all things army, could you suggest a direction?

BTW I am easily confused so keep things simple (and I have'nt heard that description for the RAF for a while - totally untrue!).

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Atom
Yes, I realise now that this is the medal card that is most likely. I have since spent an hour or two trying to use his regiment number on the Ancestry website but still I have no further info. Would really appreciate advice as to what to do next :-\

I see you've posted again dragonfly just as I was going to say that there are a good number of George Williams on Ancestry Pension records.  But, as you will have found it can be a long trawl for nothing at times.  Searching by  the regimental number doesn't always work.  Not all the records survived the WW2 bombings, added to that not all the records are on the Ancestry site yet.  So it might be worthwhile checking from time to time.   ???

Thanks Atom
I did trawl through all the George Williamses but no luck. I know there was bomb damage but I presumed that pension records were not unaffected.  You are right though, I will just have to wait until  Ancestry have completed the upload of all possible records.

I have learnt a great deal today so thanks to all -

but if anyone has more info to offer, it would be much appreciated.
