Shares in ships
« on: Monday 14 April 08 12:07 BST (UK) »
I found a will for Jacob Waller, butcher, of Great Ayton dated 1797, probate 1810 in which he left his share of the ship Garland to his wife. Where could I find out more about this? ( the only Garlands I've found so far are navy ships).
Thank you.

I thought I had found it on the following site:

http://www.reach.net/~sc001198/Lloyds.htm

However it seems that it is a few years too late.  The site is worth watching however because more ships are being added continuously from the Lloyds lists.

Shares in ships were sometimes just shares in the cargo for a particular voyage and the costs of that voyage.

Hi David, thank you, I've bookmarked that site, it looks very interesting. Having a share in a cargo would make sense as apart from Captain Cook, Great Ayton isn't very nautical and also making a will would be sensible. Now then, I wonder if there might be records somewhere.......... ;D
