Would appreciate if anyone is able to look up the following marriage -

Simon Page
and
Mary Page (don't know if this is her maiden name or not)

St. Leonards, Colchester
13/1/1784

Hoping there may be other info such as OTP etc; ages; witnesses.

Many thanks, Irene

Hallo: I went to Essex Record Office today and looked up the above marriage.  (reference D/P 245/1/4: fiche 1 of 2). Simon Page and Mary Page are both described as single persons of [Saint Leonard's parish]. No ages given. They both signed the register (rather than simply making their mark) and the witnesses were John Carter and John Bland. The second name appears quite often as a witness - maybe he was the parish clerk.
I'll send you the image if you wish but I don't know how

Thank you so much Clincher,  At least now I can put that one to rest and be happy that they were both Page's!!  Now the big thing starts in determining their baptisms - bit difficult with no ages - perhaps I should be looking at deaths if I can find them.  Pretty sure Simon died in 1841 but as for Mary - no idea.

Regarding the image do you have scanner and if so I can make my email address available for you to send otherwise perhaps someone can advise the protocol of such a thing.

Thanks again,  Irene

Hallo Irene: In the past I have opened a temporary e-mail address (as has the correspondent) and closed it down as soon as it has served its purpose. That way no spam etc (hopefully). So my temp e-mail address is ero2005@fsmail.net

Hi Clincher,

Have just printed out the marriage entry!!  Fantastic stuff for my records!

Can you answer a question for me please?

If I have two deaths from the Free BMD site which I am relatively sure are mine (1840 & 1841) - Simon and Mary Page - would their be a burial for them and do you know what sort of info might be on the burial register if there is one?

Regards, Irene

Hallo Irene: I'm glad it worked!!! I've now closed that e-mail a/c.
Although I have tried to use the Free BMD site I have never succeeded in loggin on to it so I've no idea of what it can provide.
If that site's info is based on the certificates issued by GRO then I am pretty confident that no reference will be made to any burial site simply because the older death certificates I have obtained (and modern ones too for that matter) do not provide for burial info. But perhaps someone else can give a more authoritative answer than that.
As far as the burial registers kept by parishes are concerned, in my experience they give the barest of details unless the death was unusual in some way or the person was 'one of the toffs'. If you wish I'll check the Saint Leonard's burial register for you. You never know your luck.

Hi Clincher,  They aren't in the Colchester ones because after marrying Simon and Mary went and lived in Writtle.

So therefore the rego district for the two deaths is Chelmsford which includes Writtle so as the family stayed in Writtle for a long time I expect that is where they were buried.

Simon Page  Dec Qtr 1841
Mary Page June Qtr 1840

The earlier GRO indexes don't have ages at death as do the later ones so I was rather hoping that the parish burials might.  Pie in the sky I know but it would help to narrow down when they were born.  This doesn't mean to say the actual death certificate won't have an age but its a big risk to pay that sort of money on the offchance.  Unfortunately your British death certificates don't have anywhere near as much info as our Australian ones - in most states you get the fathers name and even mothers maiden name on a death certificate.  And in later years from I think from memory 1903 you get place of birth, number of children both living and dead - male and female, if not born in Australia - how many years as a resident etc etc.  This is great for earlier research as when you think about it a lot of the folk who came to Australia say in the 1850's and onwards didn't die until after then so you get good info.

Cheers, Irene

Hi Clincher, Irene here!!

Can you tell me offhand whether or not you noticed what sort of period the St. Leonards registers covered.

I'm thinking along the lines of searching for Simon Page's baptism.  It seems there weren't a lot of Simons around according to the IGI!
