I had a look at the Chelmsford Union workhouse records and, sadly, any detailed records for 1838-1841 are not in Essex RO.
I did look in the ledger ( ref: G/Ch Z5) and  Guardians' minutes ( ref:G/Ch M3) and the closest I got was a payment of £4/6/7 made to one Charles TURNER on Sep 29 1841 for 6 coffins for paupers dying in the Union House.
The minutes sometimes contained notes to the effect that person X was required to pay to support of inmate parent Y or illegitimate child Z etc but saw no PAGE references in the available time.

I've still got to send you some PAGE data - I'll do that later

Irene, thanks for your message.
This is the data I've gathered. I made notes of it on a 'just in case it was useful' basis rather than believing it would be much use to you.

I'm no expert on names or social history but especially for that period Philip (twice), Judith (twice) is, even individually, let alone in a combination summat I cannot remember coming across before in quite a lot of peering at Essex registers. If Bridget can be twisted out of Brigitte and Simon is said the right way...is there a French connection. There were lots of Huguenots in Colchester.
I cannot find a single baptism of a Judith, Bridget or Philip of any or the right period in Essex. So why did they come to Saint Leonard's to be buried? and from where?

I suppose all that is a bit fanciful but whilst doing a search for someone else in Thorpe le Soken(just down the road from Colchester) I discovered a French/Huguenot church in Thorpe. The IGI baptisms for it cover only period 1683-1775 but according to Essex RO they continue until 1796 so I'll check them out

Hallo Irene, I've done all kinds of things which sadly led to nothing. I searched baptism records of relevant times for Thorpe le Soken, Kirby le Soken and Wivenhoe*.
I've even read the Essex Standard for the weeks following death of Mary PAGE (and Simon) in case there were clues there but nix

* If I am reading the list properly these parishes do not show (or do not show for the relevant years) in the list of Essex places included in IGI. I wonder how many other 'holes' there are in the coverage?
At least for time being ( I have to search my London stuff now) I haved to call quits but I'll keep an eye open

As always Clincher, thank you so much for the time and effort you have put in on my behalf.  It is truly appreciated.

I think the Page's should be put to bed for a while and I have just reactivated my interest in one of my paternal ancestors due to a stroke of luck and rereading old notebooks from ten years ago!!

Thus my husband's Pages, Smith's et al will have to have a break!

Let me know if I can do anything for you here in Australia.

Best regards, Irene
