I can't find william on the 1841 census.  He was born in 1831 merthyr tydfil and his fathers name was morgan mainwaring also from merthyr.  I don't know where to start to try and fing baptism record!!   If i could find he and his father on the 1841 it would be a massive step.  Can anyone help me?

Hmm. If he's the correct one then William doesn't seem to be at home in 1841  :-\

Scrap this!! I think there are 2 Morgans with a similar profile!

1841
HO107/1415/9 25 10
Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan
Mill Street

Morgan Manwaring, 35, Iron Miner, born in county
Hannah, 25, born in county

This one isn't widowed in 1851

Hmmm. Long shot?

1841
HO107/1415/5 29 5
Merthyr Tydfil

Morgan ?Manier?, 30, Haullier, yes
Ann, 30, yes
William, 9

Honestly, the name doesn't look like Mainwaring but it's the only William age 9/ father Morgan combination I see in Merthyr in 1841.

Driving me mad  you'd think as it's not a common name for wales it'd be easy.  Yes, william did marry margaret Morris.  the 1851 record is correct.  however, i've looked for the marriage.  the only margaret morris married around 1850 married william MANNER.  Is it he???   But where is morgan.  There is a morgan MANERING married to Hannah in the 1841 but i have no proof he's the correct one.  i'm wondering whether the baptism records may be a safer bet but where do i start?  You may be able to tell that i've started puulling my hair out!!!!

Very welcome  ;)

Well, the name may have shifted *a bit* through time. If he was Manner at marriage then my 1841 find looks likely! The same Morgan in 1861 looks like Morgan 'Manwaren'.

I think you can rule out the one married to Hannah - the family are shown as 'Mannering' in 1851 (HO107/2458  725 50)

Thank you.

do you think it's safe for me to take this as being "the" one.  Is there a way i could prove it?

If they were mine I wouldn't adopt them just yet but I'd keep them in mind as strong possibles.

You could get hold of the marriage cert to check if this William Manner has a father Morgan indeed, and if his address at marriage is the same than the address shown on the 1851 census. This would prove at least that the family went under name variations ranging from Manner to Mainwaring.
(Were all the children's births registered as Mainwaring by the way?)

Also, let's see if someone has access to Merthyr christenings!
