1901 census
« on: Friday 18 April 08 10:45 BST (UK) »
Could anyone tell me if the 1901 census on Scotland's People is the original or is it a transcribed sheet.

I have accessed the entry on Ancestry and I am wondering if the age on an entry is wrong.

If anyone has access to the original 1901 census for Elgin could they look up a Mary MacKenzie.

She is down as an 80 year old domestic servant at 35 Moycroft,  Elgin.  I was hoping she might have been a Mary Ann McKenzie born 1880.

The details on Ancestry are
Reg. No. 135
ED18
Household schedule number 27
Line 7
Roll CSSCT1901_40

If you can access this could you find who is living at 40 Moycroft.

Any help with this would be great

Betty

Thanks Sybil for trying.

I am pretty sure I have the right person but the age has been transcribed wrong on Ancestry.

Thanks for your time.

Hi

Ancestry is a transcription of films of the Enumerators Books the images of which are available on Scotlandspeople. Whilst the Enumerators books are original they are in fact compiled from Enumeration forms distributed to each household which means that the Enumerator could also make transcription errors in writing up the books.

If when searching a particular Scottish census on Ancestry you scroll to the bottom of the page to where it says For more information about this database click here and have a look it details information about the census.

Could anyone tell me if the 1901 census on Scotland's People is the original or is it a transcribed sheet.

On Scotland's People you see images of the original documents, except for the 1881 census which is a transcription at present.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks for that.

I will use some credits to confirm or otherwise my theory of the age quoted on Ancestry.

Thanks for your time.
