'Dublin Bairned Balla'
« on: Friday 18 April 08 15:30 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know of the place name 'Dublin Bairned Balla' ?
My GG Grandmother, Frances Stevenson 1863-1900 has this name as place of birth on the 1881 census when she was living in Fareham, Hampshire and in 1891 it just said Ireland. I have searched but have come up with nothing. She unfortunately died of Typhoid Fever in 1900 aged  37.
Thanks

Hello Westy,

Dublin is also known as Baile Αtha Cliath. I think the phrase is Ban-nghe Baile.

Hi Christopher
Thanks for that, its one mystery solved. I imagine that the transcriber of the census in England spelt it as it was said !!!. As your on do you know if birth certificates for Ireland are available, I am after my grandfather's and he was born in 1907 in Waterford, he came over to England when he was 15 and never spoke of his family so we have no idea of parents etc. This line is the other side of my tree so no relation to Frances Stevenson.
Cheers
Westy

Hi Westy,

Records from 1864 to 1922, for all Ireland, and from 1922 for the Republic are held at
the Office of the Registrar General, Joyce House, 8-11 Lombard Street, Dublin 2, Ireland. Northern Irish records since 1922 are held at the GRO, Oxford House, Chichester Street, Belfast, Northern Ireland, BT1 4HL www.ireland.com/ancestor/browse/records/state

Hello Anne,

How are you?

I'm sorry Mo and yourself didn't make it to the Meet at the Dublin City Library.

By the way do the GRO now have two places in Dublin or have they closed Joyce House?

Christopher
