William DOWN
« on: Sunday 20 April 08 11:56 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the parents of William Down. Born in 1808. I think he married Ann Saunders in 1841. The area I have looked is Merton, Black Torrington in Devon. I have also found he was a wheelwright.
Does anyone have any information for me

Hi Sylvann,

I was wondering if you already had the 1841 census details showing William and Ann already together (when the marriage you mention took place after the 1841 census):

1841
HO107/250/11 11 17
Bow, Devon

William Down, 30, Carpenter
Ann, 25
Sarah, 4
Elizabeth, 3
William, 1
Frederick Leech, 20, Apprentice
William Rowdon, 15, Apprentice
Elizabeth Underhill, 11, Female servant

All born in Devon.

William's birthplace is Merton according to all census therefore this extracted IGI record looks quite good, doesn't it?

WILLIAM DOWN
Christening 12 JAN 1808   Merton, Devon
Father CHARLES DOWN
Mother SARAH

In the same batch, there's another christening for a Down child to parents Charles and Sarah which gives Sarah's maiden name:

JOHN DOWN
Christening 23 JUN 1805   Merton, Devon
Father CHARLES DOWN
Mother SARAH COPP

There's a marriage:
Sarah Copp - Charles Down
Marriage 22 OCT 1804   Merton, Devon

All records found on www.familysearch.org

(The 1841 census shows a Charles Down in Merton: Charles Down, 71, Carpenter, born in county)

Hi all,
Belatedly tapped into this message line.
I am seeking information for Charles DOWN and wife Mary, who had issue Mary 1689, John 1692, Charles 1697, William 1700 and Richard 1704 (the latter died in infancy) - all born Merton Devon.  expect Charles and Mary wed about 1688.
There are tantalising records for earlier DOWNs in this area, but not for "my" Charles.
I would so much appreciate any help possible.
Regards to all,
Lorraine,
Australia
