Royal Signals, Catterick
« on: Sunday 20 April 08 12:02 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

This is a bit of a (actually it's a huge) longshot.....

My grandfather served with the Royal Signals during WW2 and was stationed at Catterick in Yorkshire.  I believe that he was there from just after the war started and remained there for the duration of the war .  From stories he told me I think he was attached to the Quartermaster's Stores.  He was still in the army in 1946, when he married my grandmother, although he must have been demobbed shortly thereafter.

I have a copy of his wedding photograph, but would love to see one of him in uniform.  Does anyone have any group photos of the QM Stores personnel at Catterick around this period?

If you need more information, please contact me by PM.

Best wishes

Caterick is a garrison with a number of barracks, each would have had QM Stores, so  I'm afraid  you would at least have to know which barracks he was stationed in.

You could try the association or link to the museum they could tell you more.  As stated Catterick was a massive garrison especially during WW2 and he could have been anywhere there.  Most of the camps are named after world war one battles such as Vimy, Messines etc.

I knew that Catterick was a large place, but I hadn't appreciated that each barracks would have had its own QM stores.

I've checked the 1946 marriage certificate and it gives his residence as Mosul Lines, so from what you've both said, this could be his barracks.

Certacito - thanks for the link - I had seen it earlier, but it seemed to be for ex-members of the regiment - I'll go and have a better look now.

Best wishes

You sure it isn't Mons lines?  That was (is?) there.

The marriage certificate definitely gives his residence as 'Mosul Lines, Catterick Camp'.

Never heard of that one when I was there but that was well after the war.  Mosul being in the middle east so I presume we were fighting there in the first war?

You could go on here  http://www.rsars.org.uk/ and sign the guest book and put your request.  A lot of these guys are very old hands (no offence guys) and would remember a lot more than I did.
