searching for records
« on: Monday 21 April 08 11:07 BST (UK) »
Good morning,

I wonder If you could advise me on my research.

I am seeking the existance of a man in the Sherburn Hill area of County Durham between 1919 and 1920 called William (Bill) Howarth, what type of records or sources would help my find him there then?  Would there have been electoral registers or any other documents which may help?

Thanks.

kind regards,

Ed

Hi Ed,
Do you have any idea of his year of birth? If he was born before the 1901 census he may be findable on this census. Do you know the names of any other family members who may be with him?

Hi,

No, I have no information other than a name   ???

My granfather was illegitimatly born in 1920 in Sherburn Hill Durham, and the only reference to the father was the name Bill Howarth, from an old neighbour.  He could have been born around 1895ish but not sure at all.

I'd like to see find out if there's any way of determining if there was a Bill Howarth in the Sherburn Hill area, or whether its a red herring.

Thanks ed.

These are the William Howarths that appear on the 1901 census on Ancestry:

John Wm Howarth (son)
parents John & Margaret
b 1900  Darlington

William Howarth (head)
spouse Isabella
b 1869  Darlington

William Howarth (son)
parents John & Bessy
b 1894  Waldringfield, Durham

William H Howarth (head)
spouse Harriott
b 1870  b Rochdale, Lancashire, England Head
living in Middlestone, Durham

William T B Howarth (son)
parents Thomas E & Mary A
b 1898  Lamesley, Durham

Let me know if you would like further details about any of these. But unless you have some concrete evidence it's probably going to be not much more than more than guesswork  :-\
Do you have your grandfather's birth, death or marrige certificates? Just wondering if they give any clues?

there's no father on birth or baptism records, and my great grandmother refused to tell my grandfather for his marriage and military records.

the only information i have is from my grandfathers old neighbour who recalled bill howarth talked about at the time as the father.

would be nice to find out if there was a bill howarth at the time as a starting point.

wonder if any of the affore mention bill howarths lived at sherburn later on about 1920.  most people worked at the coal mine there, so probably would only have moved there if they were miners or associated trades maybe.

Oh, such a shame your g grandmother kept this man's identity to herself  :-\

I'm afraid you might have to wait a year or so for the 1911 census .... to trace the William Howarths found above.

I think you're right - the miners moved to where the jobs were.

thanks for the help...

yeah, its a real shame..  i wouldn't have cared as much if it was on any other branch of my tree, but its my direct family line on my fathers side... so would really like to find his identity,  to find out what my true family name is to research.

cheers ed.
