Birth/Death Certificates
« on: Monday 21 April 08 12:50 BST (UK) »
Hi
Im fairly new to this ancestry game and would like to know if birth & death certificates are available to view. I know that copies of the  originals are available from the GRO in Southport but are any held on microfilm in the local county archives. I saw a TV programme recently and the presenter said that he had seen a birth certificate on line, I didnt think that this was true but may be it was.
I have access to the index's but you are never sure if you have the right person

Hello Westy

If you are interested in Enland and Wales then I can confirm that BMD certificates are not available to view on line.

Hi Westy,

Welcome to rootschat!

Maybe the TV presenter was referring to Scottish records which can be downloaded from a site called Scotland's People. You need to pay for a certain amount of credits, different records cost different amounts of credits - overall, it's good value for money.

You may find this a useful site to keep in your favourites:

It can be confusing at first but is worth persisiting as it contains a wealth of information, including where the Church Records are held. As well as the GRO in Southport, I believe you can order copies of certificates from local record offices (cost is about the same). Unsure if you are able to view them on film or fiche at the Record Office.

If you post the name of the person (along with as much information as you know) whose b, m,or d you are looking for, on the appropriate board, then maybe someone can help narrow them down for you.

Thanks all for the help
I think the TV programme was about identity fraud and it was saying how easy it was to get info from birth certificates on line, wish it was that easy !!!

Genuki is great, but as you say a bit confusing.  The best way I've found to use it is to google (other search engines are available  :))  whatever I'm looking for, but include the word genuki in the search terms.
