The CSEoA are files for established civil servants and civil service examination candidates, collected by the Civil Service Commission (CSC) from 1855 in order to establish accurate birth dates for the purpose of either ensuring that an examination candidate was of the required age, or granting a pension.  The collection comprises those born in England (37% of all entries), Ireland (28%), Scotland (6%), Wales (2%), the British Empire and further afield.

Thanks, Christopher - just had a look & it seems that there may be two of OH's family on there - one we know the details + another where all we had was "Ireland" so this looks useful, if it's the right one.

Hi mshrmh,

I notice that these records would be more accurately titled "The Remains of the Civil Service Evidences of Age", as it is estimated that it constitutes only 2% of the papers originally held by the Civil Service. The remaining 98% were destroyed by the Civil Service.

Over the years the Government has had a ball destroying records ... the Irish Census Records and these ones. I wonder what other important records they destroyed.

They include information about the birth and the baptism of my great-grandmother's sister, and include the writing of my great-great-grandfather - just how wonderful is that?! :) :) :)
