Border crossing - Joseph Dyson & family
« on: Tuesday 22 April 08 19:57 BST (UK) »
Hello

I wonder if anyone can help?

Joseph Dyson (b.1873), his wife Alice (b.1876) and son Ernest (b.1902)emigrated to Canada in 1904 stating their destination as Westville. N.S. Joseph was a pharmacist. The family later moved to Connecticut and I would be most interested to find out which year.  I do not have access to U S census/ border crossing details. I do have dates and places of death.

Best wishes,

Fairlane

Have you got Ernest on the 1930 census?

On there he gives date of immigration as 1906.

WWI Draft Registration- Joseph Dyson born 4 Apr.1873, weaver, lists Alice as person who will know his whereabouts.
1930 U.S. Census lists Ernest, wife Maude and a daughter living in Brookyn, Conn.

Thanks Tazzie and Aghadowey. You have given me several unknown facts which help to fill out their lives in U.S.

In 1891 Joseph was a weaver as were most of his family but in 1901 he was a drugstore shopkeeper on his own account. On the ship's manifest in 1904 he was a "farmer" which I assumed was a corruption of "pharmacist" but he obviously reverted to his original trade in America. I also hadn't realized that Joseph at age 40 would be drafted.

In appreciation,

World War I Draft Registration (United States) was a registration not an actual draft. See here for more details:
