1861 Census lookup please: Matthew HODGES
« on: Wednesday 23 April 08 13:28 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can someone please look up Matthew and Charity HODGES in the 1861 census?

He was a tailor, born in Deptford, Kent in 1811; she was born in Ashwick Somerset in about 1807.

I am keen to see if other members of the family may have been visiting the family at the time of the 1861 census.

In 1851, they were in Shepton Mallet in Somerset, and in 1871, they were in Roath in Glamorgan.

Matthew had a number of brothers and sisters, many of whom seem to have disappeared from Somerset, and I wonder if they had moved to Glamorgan as well.

Thanks in anticipation.

Many thanks

It looks as if there weren't other members of Matthew's extended family staying with him, at least at the time of the 1861 Census.

Thanks for the quick response.

Kind regards

maybe if you could give names and birthdates and birthplaces of the extended family
we might be able to track them down in 1861.

Wozzle

I would be pleased to find any sign of the following (I left left out children who I know died in infancy - these are the ones that might have or definitely did reach adulthood).

Matthew HODGES was born in Deptford in 1811 and died in Glamorgan in the 1890s.

William Carter HODGES was born in Deptford in 1812 and died in Somerset in the 1890s. He and his wife Zipporah didn't have any children.

John HODGES was born in Shepton Mallet in 1817. I can't see him anywhere except perhaps in the 1841 Census with the wrong age (14 instead of 24).

George HODGES was born in Shepton Mallet about 1818. The only sighting of him so far is as a married, unemployed cheese monger in Stepney, London in 1861. I don't know where he was either before or after then.

Ann HODGES was born in Shepton Mallet in 1821. She was still living with her parents in the 1851 Census in Shepton Mallet, aged 27, but I think she may have married between 1851 and 1861. One possibility is that she married John DAVIS in Shepton Mallet.

James Hodges was born in 1825 in Shepton Mallet, but I can't seem him in later censuses.

Eliza Charlotte Hodges was born in 1830 in Shepton Mallet. I don't know what happened to her, although I have found an Eliza aged 15 (not 10) with John and Ann Hodges in Shepton Mallet in 1841.

So if you or anyone else can identify what happened to these people after they were born and baptised it would be great. The only ones I have traced for sure are the oldest two: Matthew and William.

Kind regards

Philip Candy

You have John Hodges as b. 1817 , but state he is  wrong age in 1841 - is it possible he was born 1827 and the 1841 entry is correct???

There is (what looks like) the George you have in 1861 -and brother John is with him in 1851
